Girls here know Floyd, they will actually go watch a floyd fight if it's being held...a lot of my friends do. Manny fights they might goto the fight party, but they won't watch the fight....people love to drink. So i think you're misunderstanding something here.
I'd say Pacquaio is more well known globally by far and to the casual boxing fan, but that's just my opinion. I understand using your friends as evidence, but it doesn't hold much weight. My friends knew about Pacquaio before Floyd, doesn't mean **** anyway. I think Pacquaios style is easily more 'casual' friendly and as such attracts more people in general (excluding PPV).

Floyd has a very loyal niche fanbase, which is rooted within the boxing community, which is why he has far more PPV buys. However, Manny is more widely known by those who aren't fans/followers of the sport.
I dont ask the casual fan about him and get a good answer. The reason the casual fan knows more about Floyd, is because he was painted as the new greatest fighter ever since the 90's. The fact that he's still undefeated and dominating, just makes him almost legendary in the eyes of the casuals. Most people I talk to, barely know anything about Pac. He just really blew up overnight a few years ago.

replace mcilroy by Tiger Woods, get Klitschko out of that list (nobody outside of Germany and boxing fans know him) and I pretty much agree with you

The thing is I think the TS is talking about who is the most known athlete in the world. I think he's making a big mistake to think that Pac is the more known athlete in the world.

Truth is there is not one single boxer alive beside Ali that is known worlwide. The more known athletes in the world are soccer players. The likes of Messi, Beckham, Ronaldhino, Ronaldo, Rooney are known EVERYWHERE. Go in Africa and ask people who Pacquiao and Mayweather are, they will never know, ask them after if they know Messi and Samuel Eto'o, that will be another story.

And also, never underestimate how famous the fastest man alive can be, pretty much everybody in the world has heard of Usain Bolt. I would also add to the list Federer, Nadal, Schumacher, Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan.

It must suck to go to sleep every night praying you wake up in 2009

Also, more Americans know Wlad for dating Hayden Pantieri (whatever the **** her name is) than they know him for being a boxer...sad but true.

yes, ali put boxing back in the scene....that's why he is the goat....

but there is also truth in that boxing lost some grounds to other sports...

but it is entirely wrong to say that dlh or pac or pbf singlehandedly lift boxing back to its level.....

you need at leat two to tango.....

rivalries, explosive fights to name just two....are elements required to boost the sport...

a very good dancing partner is required to achieve both....

this is partly true. Alot of people jumped on the boxing bandwagon during Pac's rise to stardom, but you also have to give credit to Floyd as well

This is the only reason that really counts.

Just look at what's happening with the NHL now they're shifting their content over to NBCS. They went from getting around 4 million people watching for some events, now on NBCS less than 1 million tine in. Network is everything. Only difference is the NHL changed network due to a decline in ratings allowing NBCS to buy them cheap, while boxing only changed because HBO and Showtime offered them more money.

I think Mayweather is the bigger global star, at least from my experience.

Pacman is known over here because of what he did to Hatton, Mayweather is known over here because of that too. But has a much more media friendly personality, connections with 50 cent, is a native-English speaker and the way he boxes.

I think the real shame is that only a handful of people would know the heavyweight champions.
