Funny thing about that is, the top boxer of every generation is credited with saving the sport. Sugar Ray Leonard, Oscar De La Hoya, Mike Tyson, Mayweather, have all spoken about how they single handedly brought boxing back to life. It'll probably be the same for Canelo in the future too. People have this image of a once upon a time when boxing was a top sport like the football and the NFL, but if that was the case then why did all these great boxers declare themselves the saviours of a dying sport?

This is simply not true, if you go onto google trends and type in their names it can show you where people search from.
      Mayweather's search index is as follows. Puerto Rico = 100, Philippines = 71, USA = 54, Ghana = 31, UK = 30, Panama = 24, Canada = 23, Nicaragua = 22, New Zealand = 18, South Africa = 17, Mexico = 16, Australia = 14, Kenya = 14, Argentina = 10, Nigeria = 8,
      Pacquiao's index is as follows. Philippines = 100, Puerto Rico = 20, Mexico = 15, Nicaragua = 12, USA = 10, Panama = 9, Canada = 6, UK = 4, AUS = 3.
As you can see from the numbers, Mayweather has people searching his name on google from more countries around the world. Pacs main fanbase is the Philippines. Outside of that he really isn't that huge.

I think the real shame is that only a handful of people would know the heavyweight champions.
A handful? So being the biggest stars in mainland Europe = a handful of people? Before Matchroom boxing got their monopoly with Sky Wlad and Vitali were consistently among the most watched events on the network in the UK. The Haye and Chisora fights were absolutely huge around here. In the US Wlad has appeared on Conan O Brian numerous times and Vitali on Jay Leno. Vitali's fight against Arreolla is still the most watched boxing match on HBO in recent years with over 2 million viewers. Wlad's fight against Haye was originally said to have done over 3 million viewers, but seems to have been swept under the rug since then. You can also bet boxing mad countries in Latin America are at least aware who the HW champ is. In the Philippines almost every major boxing match is aired on the major sports networks. They were also key guest speakers for the charity dinner held before the London Olympics.

Boxing fans seriously under estimate just how well known Wlad an Vitali are.

Gtfo with that google trend bullcrap. If we all believed that garbage then the grumpy cat is the biggest celebrity on the planet.

Manny is a global star and commercial branding by Nike has helped get him over. When was the last time you say Floyd do a commercial? He is too much of a prick to be a hero and that's why people connect and relate with Manny. He is the rags to riches story.

Edit: here's why this trending nonsense is ******ed

Apparently a photographer of Justin Bieber is one of the most popular people in the world right now.

Compared to previous heavyweight champions, they are nothing...

You better not be located in Britain....

Since most people outside the US can't name a single American athlete I ran a google search for most popular american athlete, and you what, news articles about Floyd Mayweather came up. Go figure. Anyway, I decided to test your google trends theory against other american atheletes.

Ahh okay yeah lets throw the statistical analysis out of the window and go with "yeah Nike means he is more widely known". I think I might start using that philosophy for more things in life. Thanks.

So being promoted by a global brand which ranks inside the top 100 out of all the companies on the planet!! That's pretty high up.

Yeah being promoted internationally by a top 100 company will never get you any recognition you're right golden boy and mayweather promotions are bigger and Floyd is a huge star everywhere.

Yeah Nike is huge and more well known than Mayweather and GBP but Nike doesn't = Pac. Nike is a brand seperate from Pac. They just sponsor him. By your logic, everyone who knows Nike must know Pac and all others who are under the brand. Well I could only name a handful of athletes I know that are sponsored by Nike and I know them because I watch them, not because they wear Nike. I know Federer and Nadal and Serena Williams because I love tennis, me knowing they are affiliated with Nike is just a fact I know about them.
