Not only is Pacquiao a well know sports star in the U.S. but internationally he is a megastar bigger than Floyd, bigger than Lebron, bigger than Tiger. Hell in Asia Manny is THE superstar. He has Nike and vodka commercials, has been on daytime and nighttime talk shows. The bottom line is he is very known virtually everywhere. Boxing hasn't seen a crossover star like him since Tyson.

But...

Even with all that recognition and superstardom beyond what any current athlete here will ever experience, the sport he participates in still has a relatively small fanbase. I fear boxing is becoming a niche sport and will always be behind soccer, football, basketball and baseball in terms of global appeal.

You're wasting your time being so pedantic, I'm sure you understand what I meant when I said that the heavyweight champion is normally well known. It's by far the most famous division in the sport, such a dominant champion would normally be as big a star as Mayweather or Pacman.

Just because they box on the European continent doesn't mean they're well known in it. I have friends who know Mayweather & Pac, they're the dominant superstars of this sport and they don't know either Klitschko. Haye talking all that shit about being the saviour of the division certainly boosted their awareness over here.

There are two countries with a larger population than europe - China and India. That doesn't make Europe any less significant. Slightly off topic anyway, but the EU is currently bordering on becoming a super state anyway. Not that it really has anything to do with Wlad and Vitali's popularity reach. Either way over 700 million is big no matter how you slice it.

Yes I understood what you meant by saying the HW champ is normally the most well known. But I mentioned earlier that it isn't always the case. I listed Lewis and Holmes as two big examples of HW champs who went under the radar. There are many more through history who simply didn't live up to public expectation and were simply ignored for the most part. The other thing is that the popularity of the HW champ has shifted because he's/they are European now. Very few US HW champs have had major popularity outside of the US.

Now the shoe is on the other foot. The champ is from Europe so that's where he is most popular. When Evander was king he was popular mainly in North America, but not much so outside. Outside the US he is known as the guy who got his ear bit off. Wlad and Vitali have a level of fame in Europe no other HW champ has had in history. Few HW champs have reached the level of fame Tyson and Ali had, but Wlad and Vitali's fame is still far, far greater than many other champs in history.

DLH took both Floyd and Manny to the NEXT level. They were both quite well known to sports fan and Manny was already popular in East Asia but by beating him he blew up. Manny for a few years WAS Boxing. Dude put on some very exciting performances.
