Why does Chad Dawson want a fight with Andre Ward so badly?

Yeah, I agree with this. I don't know what fight it was but I remember Dawson saying he made 2 million for a fight(maybe Pascal, it was a few years ago). HBO will pay big money for this fight.

HBO isn't paying Dawson much more than what they already guarantee him. That excess money is going to Ward.

About only fight around his weight class that will give him a decent payday. I also think that Hopkins win bolstered his confidence and he wants to prove he's best. I still would rather see him face the winner of Pascal-Cloud, but there will still be time after this fight I guess.

and yes they will offer way more because 1. they want Ward 2. they both make more than than the 2.5-3 million you are suggesting should they fight each other and 3. HBO loves to overspend

But the highest license fee HBO has ever given to a WCB was I think 4 million for Hopkins-Calzaghe.

I can't really figure this out. I would think he would want to avenge the Pascal loss, which I think he could easily do. A rematch with Pascal in Canada would be bigger than a Ward fight anywhere in the US IMO. Andre Ward isn't really that big of a name.

Do you think it's just because there really aren't many good fights at LHW? Still, I'd think he would rather fight a few guys at LHW like Pascal and Cloud. Then maybe Ward would be ready to move up to LHW and Dawson wouldn't have to move down in weight.

Ward is the most respected fighter he could possible fight. Pascal is booked up now. I am sure he will fight the Pascal Cloud winner if he beats Ward. When it comes to fighting the best fighters Dawson has been damn good.

Dawson doesn't want to rematch Pascal in Canada, he already said if there's a rematch it will have to be in the states and Pascal is not a draw there. HBO will pay big money for a Dawson vs Ward fight. People think just because you don't sell a lot of tickets that means you're not worth a lot of money, that's wrong just look at Bradley. This will be a very lucrative fight for Dawson.

I think HBO is trying to find the floyd replacement. They've got Canelo, Nonito, they may need a PR star now that JUanMa is toast. They also need some fresh african american fighters.

i'd like to think so but i don't think thats how he operates

it's about money period

and if you think about it pascal and cloud and both heavy handed Ward is not plus he is a division down from what Dawson has been used to

his thinking is probably if he can take shots from guys like Johnson and Tarver he could take Ward's pretty well

I think Ward is a clearly a very solid fighter but he has never been in with anyone that has the athletic ability and boxing acumen that Dawson has

should be interesting if nothing else can't see it being a barn burner somehow

Pascal and Cloud are fighting eachother in August. None of those fights can happen.

He just beat Hopkins.

That's already the top 3 LHW's right there. The rest, Campillo who should be the real #3 LHW in place for Cloud, Cleverly. The rest are not even worth mentioning. Ward is possibly the best fighter from 168-Cruiser as far as accomplishments go. Dawson is second best, being LHW Ring Champion, with an underrated resume of Hopkins, Tarver 2x, Johnson 2x, Adamek, and Diaconu, Dawson has a case of claiming the best spot from 168-CW if it wasn't for his loss against Pascal. This is the best fight that can be made at 168-175 right now, it won't be Ward vs Gatti or Vazquez vs Marquez, but it's the type of fight that promoters should be putting together. Real champions fighting eachother.


To answer your question, why he wants it that badly. Like I said before, Ward and Hopkins have some similarities, Dawson feels that if he could clearly beat Hopkins, who's still a solid fighter and beats #s 1-10 at LHW. Then Dawson feels that he can beat Ward. Dawson wants that 0, he wants to be in the P4P top 10, he wants legacy fights, he wants to fight the best. Dawson-Pascal II will come, but only Dawson beats Ward and Pascal beats Cloud. It'll happen.
