Jackie Patterson was the World flyweight champ for 5-6 years, (I sparred with him, he nearly killed me) Georges Carpentier held every title of France, and I think perhaps (but not sure) of Europe (when the next step from a European title was to a World title) from, FLYWEIGHT to HEAVYWEIGHT ending up at just over middleweight avoirdupois.

It was of Carpentier that the famous story was told about his fight with Bombardier Billy Wells the British Champ, in England. that "when the bell rang for the 1st rd, this fat man in a ringside seat dropped his programme...when he straightened up, the fight was already over. And incidentally, when you see the intro to an old British Gaumont movie where there is a man in a lionskin hitting a HUGE hanging metal gong with a club, that's Bombardier Wells.

Carpentier also KO'd ATG Ted Kid Lewis with one punch, in the 1st rd, when Lewis turned to the ref to complain. Of course Lewis was a welter and Carpentier was a heavy middle but it was for the European (or World) lt. heavy Title.

When he came over to fight Jack Dempsey, he was only 160 odd lbs and the promoters (I think it was Tex Rickard) were faking all the pictures taken together so that he would look big enough. He carried extra weight at the weigh in also.

No, Carpentier was one of the better ATG's in my opinion.

But why not try answering his question?
I don't have to try to answer his question because it has no answers to satisfy the spirit he asked it in. Papp was 32 when he turned pro, well past his best. He still was unbeaten, and had a Title fight signed with Joey Giardello when the Hungarian Govt made him retire to become the National Team Coach. He was fancied to win. He was 39.

He did what no boxer had ever done before, won 3 successive Gold Medals, I think his final victory was against Cus D'Amato trained Jose Torres, who later beat Joey Maxim for the Lt.,Heavyweight Title.

The fact that you're using this for considertaion with an ATG ranking says it all. With your logic Teofilo Stevenson was an all time great heavyweight.

well, at least Papp had a fairly good professional career, and did beat Chris Christensen better than Griffith did. I think its clear Papp was greater than Stevenson.

but you really cant call a fighter great with hypothetical wins. and Papp just never beat any ranked fighters during his pro career(although he was highly ranked for a while).

You don't want to answer the question because you know the answer.

The fact of the matter is; regardless to Lazlo Papp's impressive Amateur career, it really has nothing to do with his legacy.

Since when has a fighters Amatuer career had any addition to an ATG ranking? Never. Why would it?

Another fact is; Papp's Professional career, which ultimately is what matters, does not even come close to Floyd Mayweather Jr's. And considering him to be greater than Mayweather Jr is drastically reaching.

I agree he should be ranked higher than Stevenson as a pro. But my point was that he was using his amateur credentials to make his point. And that's irrelevant in this discussion.

Thanks, but look at your grammar and punctuation before you question someone else.
