Mayweather vs. Marquez Negotiations Stalled on Weight

EXACTLY!!!!!!!
no way in hell marquez figures floyd to come out of retirement for 2 years, PLUS make a weight he hasn't fought at for 4 years!
its posturing exactly, but the haters can't understand that.
like PW said, its one thing to get on t.v. or the internet and call somebody out, its another thing to sign the contract....Comment

You don't have to walk around at 140 to be a natural Jnr Welterweight, you have to be able to make 140 at the weigh in without being weight drained. No one walks around at their weigh-in weight.Comment

When Floyd Mayweather fought Oscar at jr. middleweight he still came into the ring weighing about as much as a welterweight. In the post fight interview he even said 'you just saw a welterweight beat a 154 lb. fighter'.
Now, I know Floyd has almost no body fat, is a gym rat, and probably walks around at a solid 147-150; but that's all muscle. He's a small guy at welterweight.
Floyd has always claimed to be legend. His fans have always entertained the idea, and anyone who has seen me posts know I like Floyd- but anyone who doesn't think he'd easily make 140, I think, it crazy.
Floyd couldn't get up to true junior middleweight size to fight Oscar. His body is already all muscle. Look at his frame now vs. say, the Gatti fight. He's more defined. More muscular; but he was already matured at the point he was fighting at jr. welterweight.
Point being, Floyd would just focus on speed training, stop lifting to be as muscular, and let his frame melt down a bit.
I see him being more effective even at 140.
Call me crazy.Comment

True, but he's only planning on moving up to 140. It goes both ways too though, Floyd is also asking Marquez to fight in a weight class he's never fought at either (two higher than where he's currently at.) I know others have done it before (Pacquiao), but even with the layoff you gotta view Mayweather as a bigger threat than the current version of Oscar de la Hoya. I just think it makes better sense to do it at 140.
Didn't Floyd only have one fight at 154 too? I only remember the Oscar fighting being at JMW.
yea, he only fought oscar at 154, and still came into the fight at 149-152 lbs. (i can't remember exactly).
you're right, 140 would be best for MARQUEZ....all i'm saying is marquez was planning to move up to 140 anyway, even before he called out mayweather, so making the fight at 140, is really asking nothing of a guy who wants to fight his next fight there anyway. my point is that floyd has been out for 2 years, so catching a fighter coming off a 2-year layoff is enough, but then asking him to make a weight he hasn't fought at in 4 years- seems a bit much, and comes off as "posturing" more than anything else.Comment

Great post all around, but this last line is the best.
I know it was Gatti, but that fight vs. Gatti was perhaps Floyd's most impressive ever, and I do think 147 is a bit too high for him (think of the welters he beat: a shot and undersized Sharmba Mitchell, a tiny welterweight in Zab and a slow, plodding welterweight in Baldomir). Oscar was a good win against a bigger fighter, but I still think he is best suited.
If this happens, to me it has to happen at 140...maybe 142 tops, and then it's a legit fight. Anything over that is a mismatch in Floyd's favor, I think, even though he's a small welterweight...JMM is a small lightweight!Comment

Even though I'd be happy if Marquez landed the fight (and the big payday), I'd much rather he fight someone else. Same goes for Floyd.Comment

i was being partly sarcastic. point is, floyd's fights are at 147, so his walk around weight must be 160-170, maybe more, and after 2 years of not fighting? asking him to make 140 seems a bit much, especially now that the contracts aren't even signed, and july is less than three months away.Comment

If Mayweather cant make 147 because he is a welterweight then theres no reason why he cant fight Mosley, Williams, or Cotto at 147Comment

Not necessarily. JMM is a small lightweight...and he'd still be moving up one weight class to get this fight. Still a size advantage for Floyd, though I don't think it will matter much. Floyd UD12, 8 rounds to 4, IMO.Comment
