    abadger - nice post.

As I explained earlier, nobody is "touting bums to hype up a resume". Joe's rep as an elite rests on his wins over Eubank, Lacy, Kessler and Hopkins, his four biggest fights, these are the fights that make his name at the top end of the spectrum. Not as good as someone like Jones, but still good.
    Agreed 100%
Another important facet of Joe's reputation, any way you want to look at it, is his unbeaten career. This is criticised by saying he "fought bums". This thread points out that in fact many of Joes opponents were not bums, but were very good fighters, good enough to win world titles. Getting past these guys alone does not make Joe "elite" or whatever you want to call it, but it does prove he's a pretty high quality champ, a step above basically all the other boxers in his division during the last ten years.
Here's where we disagree. Save for Kessler, Hops, Brewer (who I like WAY more than the completely overrated, media hyped Jeff Lacy), Calzaghe doesn't have a resume that differs from...Sven Ottke.

Many of the arguments in this thread are paper-thin. Jesus. Yeah, on paper Eubank was one of his four biggest wins but lets face it, it means nothing, Eubank took the fight at short notice, he was washed-up, even in his prime he'd got a whole host of iffy decisions against the likes of Tony Thornton, he was at the complete tail end of his career. Lacy hasn't did anything, he was almost all hype. He hasn't did **** since Calzaghe (as opposed to Jones' opponents - guys like Hop and Toney - who later went on to have huge success), Kessler - remains to be seen, but his Danish promoters have put a hell of a hype wagon on him also, and Hopkins as we all know was not the Hopkins of even four years ago, and even he made Calzaghe look like trash for about six rounds and Joe didn't even get a UD

Well, it depends what we mean by "elite". If it means beating literally the best boxer in the sport like 90s Roy Jones or current Mayweather, then no they are not elite wins. If it means beating fighters at the very top of the sport then all of Lacy, Kessler and Hopkins are. You can only beat the fighters that are there for you to beat, and I'm sure you'd agree that those three are the most significant wins Joe could have had at SMW and LHW during the time he beat them in.

Nobody (well, not me) is saying Joe is ATG #1, but I make him pretty good value for his P4P #2 - #4 slot, and believe that all in all he's had a pretty impressive career. The only guys from his era to compare him to around his weight are Hopkins, Toney and Jones and regardless of how you actually rank that lot against each other, I'll take a top 4 MW - LHW position in the last (almost) twenty years for Joe anytime.

            Fair?

Well, thats the difference isn't it, Calzaghe does have those names and Ottke doesn't. Also if all of Ottke's wins (and I have to say now I've never seen him fight) were legitimate then I would say that he too has had a pretty excellent career to go so long undefeated. If they're not legitimate, well, then its not the same.

Based soley on the fact that he is undefeated I can say that yeah I can at least put him in that company. That's fair enough.
