A fat James Toney would be hit quickly by a young, fast, Mike Tyson. He would be hit cleanly, and he would be KO'd.

If one honestly believes James Toney could beat a prime Tyson, they are actually saying that James Toney is indeed the greatest fighter who ever lived, which he ain't!
By your logic, Mike Tyson is the greatest fighter ever? I think it would be a tough fight and I can't say Toney wins everytime, but no one as skilled as Toney gets rolled like that.

        Defense: Toney
        Workrate: Marciano
        Handspeed: Toney
        Footwork: Toney

        Blueprints: Marciano-Moore, Toney-Barkley, McCallum-Harding

I can see Toney outboxing Marciano quite easily in the early rounds like McCallum did to Harding, but Marciano's workrate/pressure, like Hardings, will start to pay off for him down the stretch.

If it's a 12 rounder Toney has a very slim chance of pulling off a ud win, over 15 then I would favour Marciano on points.
my thoughts exactly. i don't see Toney getting KO'ed, he might get hurt, knocked down.. but i don't know about KO'ed.

Yeah, that's what I said. If prime Mike Tyson could SOMEHOW KO the amazing-at-heavyweight James Toney.....he must be the best ever. I mean, Toney really was incredible at heavyweight, with his wins over a prime Holyfield, the incredibly versatile John Ruiz, the fire-breathing Dom Guinn, and his tough fights with the lightning fast duo of Rahman and Sam Peter.

All hail James Toney, the invincible heavyweight.

Marciano's constant aggression and hard punching to both body and head would eventually fold Toney in the late rounds and he would be stopped despite catching Marciano routinely and keeping the fight close at the time of the stoppage.

Another thing, especially if they had fought in Toneys era - Cuts. Rocky would run the risk of a cuts stoppage even if he would happily keep slugging away with NO FACE! Still im sticking with Marciano to outwork Toney, pin him to the ropes and just bash away until the end or until JT Drops...

Golly. Further proof that A) Everyone has an opinion, deservedly or not. B) James Toney is a candidate for most overrated professional fighter ever.

Please don't mistake me; he was an excellent, excellent fighter; particularly under 175, of the same ilk as, say, Montell Griffin, Mike McCallum, Dave Tiberi, etc. Granted, his defensive acumen, speed and durability allowed him to make just a little noise at heavyweight between 2003 - 2008 late in his usefulness; but Holyfield had nothing in their encounter, and he was never much of a threat even during what was (barely) arguably THE lowest period in Heavyweight history...ever.

Incidently; some years back I co-managed a pretty good guy from Malawi, east Africa named Drake "Nightmare" Thadzi, then living in Shediac, NB, the "lobster capital of the world". We moved him to the famed Petronelli gym in Brockton, MA (irony?), and took a fight with then 28 year old Toney in May 97' for the WBO lightheavyweight strap. The vacant title was on the line for our guy only, as lazy James came in over the 175 lb limit.

But Toney was smack dab prime time, and my boy beat the brakes off him.
                Easily.
                So.....there's that.
That Toney wouldn't fold like hot laundry against Marciano smaks of casual knowledge.
