1. HBO and Maywesther Jr. were are odds, not over money per fight, but with Mayweather's demand for a six fight contract.

2. HBO was also at odds with Golden Boy (and Haymon) over other non-Mayweather fights HBO was expected to produce. In HBO's opinion Golden Boy was demanding too much money for lesser fights and Haymon was demanding complete control over opponent choices.

3. HBO announced that on average only 2% of its subscribers tuned into (free) boxing events.

4. Showtime was willing to meet both Mayweather's and Golden Boy's demands so HBO let them steal Golden Boy from them.

HBO finally decided that 'boxing' (as a loss-leader to gain subscribers) was no longer worth the cost of the Mayweather Jr., Haymon, Golden Boy annoyance.

HBO in 2018 walked away from all one night events and has focus solely on its profitable miniseries, e.g. Game of Thrones, True Detective, ETC.

It seems to me that HBO was less satisfied with boxing in general than it was dissatisfied with Mayweather Jr. and Golden Boy in particular.

Showtime, always second to HBO, was willing to throw more money into the loss-leader concept 'boxing' had become, hoping to build its subscription numbers. (The tactic HBO had used to success but no longer believed in.)
