Jeffries got ambushed on the train ride home the next day, by a reporter, while he was feeling depressed and maybe did make that statement. But he never said it again.

There is another Jeffries hater on this forum (a Johnson apologizst) who will now repost that newspaper quote for you.

So just wait a day, he loves to post the same article over and over. It is the go to quote when discrediting Jeffries.

Should I ask you to prove it?

P.S. You shouldn't get angry with me because Queen POed you.

I'm not mad at you at all, just debating. Queenie doesnt have the wits nor brains to make me angry. He's just another drunken fool. As far as the quote goes.....he said it. Whether he ever said it again or not isn't the debate. Do I think it was said under duress? Quite possibly. It's also quite possible he believed it. I'm not trying to discredit Jeffries, I just think his place in history is inflated.

I’d rather post proof than get caught lying multiple times like you

          Cool! You and me.

"Duress" is the correct word, the perfect word. Yes, I believe it was under duress.

Now, what the hell does that tell us? LOL

I'm not sure which way that pushes the speaker, to honesty or fabrication.

In court, hearsay evidence is disallowed. But there are several exceptions. Two of which are 'exclamations' (excited utterances) and 'spontaneous statements.' Both are seen as likely being honest remarks because there is no opportunity for malice of forethought.

But how does duress fit into that? Does it even apply?

I need to look and see. I really don't know how duress is viewed for honesty.

I was only pointing out to you that he said it only once, under a duressed circumstance; I was only noting it was a one-off followed by a lifetime of denial.

But yeah, he said it. That seems certain. So now what does duress mean?

P.S. Why do you want to deflate him? You got an axe to grind or are you letting the fan-boys anger you?

I don't know for sure it was or wasn't under duress. Maybe it was a moment of honesty. Maybe the rest of his life denying it was pride. None of us can or will ever know for sure. And it's not that I want to deflate rather than put him in an appropriate place given his time and accomplishments. Yes, the fan boys irk me. But this isn't me just talking out on Jeff. I'm truly looking for a reasonable rating for him.

From Traci Callis of the IBRO and what films are out there on Jeffries. No answer on what films may have been and lost so I think this is it.

                Hello Joey,

There are a number of film clips of Jeffries, a rather stiff fighter but super, super tough and strong. Jeffries seemed to get stronger as a fight wore on - the rougher the fight got, the rougher he got.

I have clips of Jeffries-Sharkey, Jeffries-Ruhlin, and Jeffries-Johnson. I also have several clips of him in training. The biggest problem is locating them among all of my things.

                Tracy Callis

Jeffries quote to a Reno paper suggests he never said he could never have beaten Johnson.

“Had I met Johnson when I was in my prime the result would have been different-I would have beaten him. As it was, I wore myself down and was beaten as much by the effects of my own exertions as I was by Johnson's blows.”

This is a credible quote from a new paper.
