I took issue with a poster who has a well known track record of hating Jack Johnson,and thinks it perfectly okay to make disgusting claims about him without providing any proof of them because it fits neatly into that hate agenda.

Yes by modern standards the British Empire was relatively brutal - but FOR THE TIME it was the most enlightened the world had ever seen (compare it with the savagery of the Belgian Congo for example).

Its funny, I was having a similar discussion with someone recently. I got no problem with presentism, if you want to say that it was bad for the British empire to colonize then thats fine, it was. Problem is, people ignore that there were empires taking over on every continent in the world. Songhai, Mongolian, Ottoman, Mexica, Mayan all violently conquered others and did basically the same thing the British empire did (kill people, take their lands, and control them). Only difference is British had more modern technology so they spread it throughout the globe, and were more recent so its remnants are still more evident in power structures today. But lets not act like Brits invented this stuff; once again not saying it was right, just that its been done by many.

What gets me is the apologizing for my ancestors nonsense. You don't need to apologize if your great, great, grandad took over my great, great, grandad's land, doesnt make you a bad person. May have set you up better, but thats nothing you need to apologize for.
