Something happened... But the dynamic is not clear. Galento was a bull and for him to respect another was a departure... We do know that he hurt "The Great One" Jacky Gleason, this has been established... But there are stories that indicate another side to him as well. We know his brother had a fight and actually hit him (apparently it was thrown) with a beer glass. While we do not know if Galento was contrite... It is sort of intimated that he did not go after his brother... Dempsey also had the respect of many.

As far as Galento begging? yeah that sounds like hyperbole.
