I suspect at some level they were all great combination punchers.
Even Dempsey who was a middling boxer had combinations in his bag of tricks.
Plus, great combinations alone doesn't get the job done. There has to be power behind them. E.g. Taylor-Chavez.
A good example of what I mean is featherweight Mike Ayala. (Mentioned in the HOF 'maybe' list.
His hands were lightening fast, technique well trained and he moved forward attacking with combinations. But he lacked the power to jump to the championship.
Also, there is a bias to call all quick-fisted fighters 'great combination punchers' but again, the speed alone doesn't mean it was a great combination if it doesn't move your opponent backward. E.g Camacho, Burley, and Rosenbloom.
On the otherhand, such fighters who weren't as fast, like SRR, SRL, Joe Louis, had the technique mastered, and could destroy opponents with combinations, e.g., SRL-Green.
I'm not sure what criteria lends itself to this list.Last edited by Willie Pep 229; 06-16-2024, 04:08 PM.Bronson66 likes this.

My vote goes to SRR, his combos were lighting fast and devastatingly powerful.
Louis, Patterson, and Tyson all had great combos at heavyweight. Ezzard Charles, especially when younger (when you can find the early films out there) was vicious with his combos. RJJ was another great one.
SRL, Manny, and Finito had great combos for guys in lighter divisions.

Louis and Dempsey was outstanding combination punchers BITD.
The best, fastest and hardest I ever saw in my lifetime has to be Ray Leonard. He was vicious, creative, powerful and the fastest combos I ever seen. He knew every punch in the book and was always in balance. Forget the Leonard from Hagler onwards. I'm talking WW SRL.Willow The Wisp
