I think you think the worst of prize fighting. I think you are seeing hobgoblins.
Neither fight was fixed.
You don't deliberately blind your opponent if your plan is to lose to him. There's much corruption, but picking winners and losers, those are actually exceptions and I argue rare.
Liston just didn't bother showing up for the second fight. They say he was ready for the Boston go, but Ali's medical postponment meant that Liston final 'peak' as a great fighter slipped away during the delay.
Second fight he went down soft, refusing to play Ali's game, he chose to play his own game of up & down and it cost him.
Was on his feet fighting when he was declared the loser. Funny way to throw a fight.

But that doesn't mean it happened that way.
They, The FBI, in 1960 had just put Carbo and Palermo in federal prison for 20 years each for extortion of an illegal Mexican fighter, they used, abused, and then dumped on the streets of Los Angeles.
The IBC had been busted up two years earlier, in 1958, under anti-trust laws (the same laws that resulted in MLB being given an exception to, as our "national pastime", so said Congress).
Once the IBC was busted up in 1958, and before being sentenced to prison, 'Blinky' Palermo became Liston's manager of record (1958-1960).
So after Palermo and Carbo were gone the FBI was still watching Liston.
But nothing came of their investigations.
Just one more fight with an unsatisfactory conclusion. Actually pretty common for the Fight Game.Last edited by Willie Pep 229; 01-12-2024, 12:06 AM.

The FBI was trying and they came up empty. That actually means something.

I am sorry if I misunderstood but the issue I thought, was the 10% to Jacobs. That is the period of Summer 1936 through Spring 1937. Louis was not yet beloved. That was a year away in Yankee Stadium.Willie Pep 229 likes this.

Regarding Blinky Palermo... My dad had a friend who used to be friends with Blinky Palermo in Philly in the 70s I believe, he said Blinky would go into get something in the pharmacy and come out with pockets filled with razors to shave ) The man was still a kleptomaniac even in retirement.Willie Pep 229 likes this.
