    My personal experience.

New Yorkers know Manhattan Island. Neighborhood by neighborhood, street by street.

Londoners don't know London. They all know their neighborhoods but West Enders can't give you good directions to any street in the East End.

There is no London street grid, a three thousand year old city that grew in convulsions and spread out in a chaotic manner. So much so, that people know the WHAT of their city, but are often ignorant to a particular WHERE that 'what' actually is.

In Short: Londoners are terrible to get directions from.
I was in London a short time...though I loved it. I did notice that Cabbies were like geniuses. I mean they know the city inside and out, our cabbie corrected my pronounciation, I had the feeling that if I wanted the formula for displacement of Uranium during a nuclear reaction, he could tell me. Also, while London seemed very international, with food that often looked great but had no ****e... paris was IMO a lot more like new York. You could see why many thought parisioners rude, when they actually were not. Like in New York, where people value their time, they would help you, just no wasted chit chat... reminds me of my mentor in college telling me about Shanghai when he was a visiting scholar: needed directions, the man he asked, in a hurry, grabs his hand (seeing he is a Northerner lol an American) and takes him to the spot.

It amazes me, an an inveterate New Yawka how many places there are where people do not know the names of streets in their own hoods! Baltimore stands out... and one better know that belair road is Blair road!

but the suburbs have grown and grown and everyone commutes from around the suburbs to work and back out again. only very rich people or those still in council housing live in the centre as it is so expensive.
i don't know if you know this but london black cabbies need to do "the knowledge" before qualifying. this means they have to go around on a moped and learn every single street in london in order to qualify.
my uncle is one. now please someone tell me "HOW THE F***K can anyone memorise every damn street in the whole city????? HOW?? i can't even remember a phone number.
London cabbies are amazing! The only thing we have here that comes anywhere near as close are the cabbies in Washington DC. If you ever look at a map of Washington DC you will know why... streets are concentric and end, only to pick up again there are quadrants so East ___ is not the same as West____. I know DC fairly well and the cabbies are on the ball. But alas, London cabbies seemed even more able.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NGX02CC5Ag i know this is wildly off topic but I thought this video was so good after what i just said about old bob and the stories he would tell us as kids, i hope you enjoy as i did this mossad story of **** hunters in the 50's. bob used to box and at the time of his youth ***ish guys were often singled out more for the worse often. bob had photo's of himself in his boxing shorts posing. it was funny as kids as we saw him as an old man and couldn't think of him as a young man at all till he showed us the photos. he loved max baer. he also really loved sugar ray robinson saying to us sugar ray was the greatest pound for pound boxer ever. does anyone here know anything about sugar ray robinson? was he a gentleman? what was he like?
Sorry it is off topic but these guys were such gentlemen of the world and heavyweight men and so clever and determined, I know it is off topic but i enjoyed it so well,
https://www.efootage.com/videos/1052...-fight-century this video is ali's friend and funny thing ali was well known ****** yet one of his closest friends was ***ish. drew bundini was ***ish. apparently they became mates because ali loved drew's way of talking, he used to really big up ali and ali loved him. ali and drew were great men.

frank bruno has been a real gentleman and he opened up about his bi polar and we in britain see him as a national treasure. I grew up loving big frank and had his poster on my wall. he does so much for charity and helping others. frank was not the best boxer and he knew that himself so he worked at it so he could earn some money (or corn) as he calls it!
He did get to fight for the title 3 times and although some say he carefully picked guys to beat to get title shots the facts are that he got to the top and when we consider the number of men around the world who box bruno got right to the top. a real gentleman.

yeah our black cabbies like to opine about many things. they are usually very well informed. one of them won mastermind which is a quiz on the uk tele.
comics are always joking about no-it-all black cab drivers. notice the kn missing as they disagree with everyone else's point of view no matter what it is!!

No matter what it is? So then when you're in one of their cabs mess with them and say that you suddenly change their mind and agree with them

Didn't his ex-wife go public a few years back and said he loved the nose candy?

Black fighters of Langford's day up until Louis probably had to be extra polite and gentlemanly, with the notable exception of Johnson. I know Louis's people worked hard on getting him to behave like a black man whites would accept. Don't gloat, never stand over a fallen opponent, etc. You can bet they also said no white women, which for Joe that was a step too far.
