But I have a real soft spot for literate warriors. You learn a lot because they can describe a lot, Dempsey's punching tome is STILL an authority on hitting properly. Tunney described the games they played and it is jarring: They would seek a birth on a ship leaving port, and at a certain time dive off the ship and swim back to shore in the Hudson! Thats tough!! I thought we were tough grabbing the back of the 3rd avenue bus for a ride in NYC!
Really? Did they do that? In the Hudson. Men were tough in those days. I don't think I have ever read any biographies of heavyweights except ali, tyson, fury and lewis over the years.
I like hearing new stories they inspire my thinking.

Boxers are often the most humble of all athletes. With the exception of the minority of brash or hostile ones, they are confident and very approachable. Dempsey was a gentlemen, never trash talker opponents or had anything bad to say about them right up to his last days. He knew what it was like to come up from nothing, poor and hungry, and he never forgot it. He was generous with other fighters.

Floyd Patterson always seemed like a class act. Corbett, Joe Louis, Max Baer, Joe Walcott, Lennox Lewis all had good reputations outside the ring. Respectful gentlemen who conducted themselves with grace and modesty.

You know nathan...growing up in the seventies? In New York City? Raising up my own two kids I often wonder how ANY kid made it out alive...We fought in the streets with what we could find, including bodega knives (007 the puerto rican kids saturday night special lol) leaded gas filled the air for a while, paint chips, big cars, no seat belts, second hand smoke everywhere, and wanna ride a bike? in traffic? no helmet...Mom and dad wanna ride to China town for some dumplings? Just put the kid in the flimsy seat, again... no helmet .

Then you read things like what Tunney describes and it gives one pause for reflection. I forgot where I read that, but someone here pulled up some clippings that Tunney had produced.

yeah it's funny but i used to feel like i knew new york quite well because i loved watching cagney and lacey and fame in the eighties. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ar41amWZs4w

joe strummer of the clash once said that you feel you know new york because you've seen it so much on tele in the uk all the time. i grew up in london kilburn very irish area but it was incredibly safe and we all were a huge gang who played together and helped each other. london today i don't think many kids play out as there is too much perceived danger.
you know i've never being to the usa but i'd love to but i am terrified of flying. i have flown about 20 times in my life and needed to get absolutely drunk to block out my fears.
the funniest thing we were discussing last week was we heard in texas men are allowed to walk around with their gun around their waist!!
i can't for the life of me imagine what i'd feel if everyone in london walked around with a gun like clint eastwood and lee van cleef can you imagine an arguement in the car park of the store or someone gets a bit too drunk and is refused service!! it seems crazy but it is allowed apparently. i have always being a fan of america. People like to knock america but who do they always run to when in dire need? Also the usa gives massively more to charity then any other country on earth. I said this to willow a week ago, everything that happens in the usa is copied here a few years later. even gangs in london have gone to wearing red for bloods and blue for crips. just completely copied.
I love america and feel that when other nations run the usa down it is like teenage kids who slag off their parents while living off them and enjoying all that they receive. i also love the way the usa shows mock us and mock irish like the simpsons and family guy they really make me laugh they have us down so well!

I know fears seem overwhelming... You can take benzodiazepens of various sorts... Valium, Atavan, (sp?) and if not a habitual user they will work wonders.

In idaho where we just moved to, not only can you openly carry, but you can also conceal and carry. We have property in nevada and like most states that allow carry, you have to have the weapon in an area where it is not concealed. You can literally see people with a firearm on the dashboard lol.

here is the thing about guns in America. There is an expression: "A well armed society is a polite society." This tends to hold true... basically you have the danger of a loose cannon now and then, which is set off against criminals knowing they will encounter resistance. Criminals hate resistance, they tell us so in interview after interview. Also, America is a violent country. We are not far behind certain South American countries and South Africa. When violence is a way of life, it takes many moons to change that socialization.

I do believe that cities like London, have a lot in common with New York... very similar dynamics, including with rentals and such. People always benefit when they have to experience "otherness" and cities make people experience others. I often tell a true story about my Dad in the Marines, 2nd world war, and... he was a ***. His mates grew to love him like any other brother and confided in him what they had been told about ***s... these were guys from very rural areas mnd you... They actually asked him if he had to shave horns off his forehead... thats no lie lol.

All the worlds cities are fantastic, they are our salvation... our universities, museums, etc. I loved London even more than Paris. parts of it looked like Queens New York lol and the Indian food was fantastic!

i know what you mean about valium as i have a history of mild prescription drug usage or could be slightly abusive especially pain pills i like them a bit too much at times to be honest.
But they dont work for me as it isn't relaxation that i need it is more a kind of devil may care who gives a F***k bring it on confidence where i am thinking "so what if i die we all gotta die who gives a **** i dont care. Then I wake up near landing feeling so dehydrated and sick as i am not a good drinker i start i cant stop till i fall asleep. I avoid drink as if i am even on a train i fall asleep and wake up the other end of the line.
but i would so love to visit new york, look at things like the actors studio where dean and brando went if it is still there. visit cbgb's. go up the statue of liberty. i hope i can in the not to long future.
the thing about gun law you hit it on the head the best anyone has. like the cold war thatcher said that the threatening danger of mass death kept the peace. it is true even if it is difficult to accept it has kept the peace.
i have had friendships with ***ish people since i was a young kid and my mom had a dear friend who was from iraq who had to leave due to saddam in 1979. I also had another friend of the family who looked after me like a dad and he was ***ish so i feel a kinship with ***ish people and i have always liked the people. we used to love jackie mason years ago. old bob would tell me and my brother tales about mossad and we were enthralled by his stories we felt "don't f**k with mossad!
              All happy memories.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NGX02CC5Ag i know this is wildly off topic but I thought this video was so good after what i just said about old bob and the stories he would tell us as kids, i hope you enjoy as i did this mossad story of **** hunters in the 50's.

Wouldn't it be nice if the Eurostar train went from Paris-London-to New York? They just need to build a bit of a tunnel! lol.

Here's one difference I noticed about New Yorkers vs. Londonders. If either of you disagree correct me.

                  My personal experience.

New Yorkers know Manhattan Island. Neighborhood by neighborhood, street by street.

Londoners don't know London. They all know their neighborhoods but West Enders can't give you good directions to any street in the East End.

There is no London street grid, a three thousand year old city that grew in convulsions and spread out in a chaotic manner. So much so, that people know the WHAT of their city, but are often ignorant to a particular WHERE that 'what' actually is.

In Short: Londoners are terrible to get directions from.

yeah you are right. central london is all walking distance apart.
but the suburbs have grown and grown and everyone commutes from around the suburbs to work and back out again. only very rich people or those still in council housing live in the centre as it is so expensive.
i don't know if you know this but london black cabbies need to do "the knowledge" before qualifying. this means they have to go around on a moped and learn every single street in london in order to qualify.
my uncle is one. now please someone tell me "HOW THE F***K can anyone memorise every damn street in the whole city????? HOW?? i can't even remember a phone number.

Yep it has kept the peace. And the only way peace is kept and anything ever changes or is in control is through violence and the threat of violence. Even Kyle said so at the end of the South Park episode 201. At least in the uncensored ending.
