Hey Rusty... question: what does it mean to cut the ring off? Thanks in advance... My computer broke and all my books fell out the window, the librarian hates me... My cell phone is circa 2000 and has no internet... So I need an expert to tell me this.

Lets not overelaborate the prowess of Mr. Joe Gans, he never fought a guy like Armstrong!

I don't think many, if any rate him above Armstrong p4p. I personally don't think he would beat Armstrong either. But his career at lightweight surpasses that of Armstrong, hence why he is the greater lightweight.

P4P Armstrong has been rated higher. His best and most productive weight was as a featherweight however. He only held the lightweight championship for a year.

As a lightweight Gans usually is top three today. For many decades he was typically top two with B Leonard.

So lightweight rankings all time would be:

            Benny Leonard
            Duran
            Armstrong?

              You're a moron.

This is ****** even by your standards.

              So what?

He had been campaigning as a Lightweight even before he won the FEATHERweight strap. And most of the his Welterweight defenses were just above the Lightweight limit against fellow Lightweights.

This has all been detailed at length elsewhere. But leave it to a dope like you to repeat old myths.

Armstrong was a Lightweight who held the Welterweight strap.

Gans was a Lightweight who was KO'd by a Featherweight.

Aside from beating Billy Conn-slayer "Serafino" Garcia, what was his best win?

He was protected, just like Mayweather.

He's clearly there for the taking for anyone with a solid uppercut, or to be avoided by fighters who don't run straight at him.

I can see he wearing down Whitaker, but Buchanan?
Does he get away with trying to muscle in on Ortiz or Arguello?

I see why people rarely rate Armstrong highly in any weight class (he seems to move around through many, not putting up a majority of his work in any given one). I agree though Armstrong was best when he was a LW competing against WWs, and I tend to usually look at him as a LW, maybe a JLW by todays standards for the start of his prime.

That being written, Armstrong has better wins than Garcia. He beat Garcia in '38, and I'd say that probably wasnt even his best win that year. Ross, Arizmendi, Wright, and Ambers I could see being better wins.
