Get rid of the head gear and silly scoring, wtf did they change it to begin with.
Roy jones jr got robbed of gold and america got butthurt and changed the whole system based off 1 badly judged fight.
Let's not act like Cotto wasn't dazed against Judah either and started doing better after some nice low blows. >__>...and this was after Judah's ass had been whupped a few times.
Cotto is one of the better body punchers Floyd has faced. But Cotto doesn't commit as much to the body like he used to..so there's that too.
Right...but apart from judah noone on floyd's resume stands out as being a better "boxer" than cotto.
I read in Ring mag that Olympic boxing is getting big in China too. The bigger the world's talent pool the better the fighters will be that are produced.:boxing::boxing::boxing:
Boxing has been big in china for the past 30yrs and ive been saying the past decade that if chinese boxers could turn pro it would change boxing's power structure completely.
But because of china's sheer population size they have the talent to land gold in just about any olympic sport there is. India though has the world's 2nd largest population and they simply arent good at anything when it comes to the olympics so its no surprise they jump on the boxing bandwagon when they taste success in it.
I remember thinking it was hilarious leonard said that pac and floyd are hurting their legacies when leonard was the 1 that set the precedent for all of floyd and pac's bull****.
You can argue the same for every sport just replace boxers with teams. A lot of Boxers have a big fan base it is just regional.
Mexico- Chavez Jr., Alvarez, Morales, Arce, Juan Manuel Marquez and many others
Japan-Kameda bros, Kazuto Ioka, Toshiaki Nishioka
Germany- Klitschko brothers, Felix Sturm, Arthur Abraham, Robert Stieglitz
Philippines- Manny Pacquiao, Nonito Donaire, Mercito Gesta, Gerry Penalosa
Any individual sport is going to have just a select few enjoy enormous success because that is the point of individual sports no teammates. Golf is the same.
The top 100 of any other individual sport's income is going to be relatively proportional to rhe ranking. Not so in boxing.
In golf a golfer can finish an event 52nd and still take home more than elite fighters like calderon or chris john have ever made in any given fight.
Chavez has less movement, defense, and work rate compared to Williams. You are joking right? Chavez won't leave his chin exposed?! This dude got no D. I will be surprised if Chavez Jr lasts over 6 rds.
The size makes a difference. Lets not kid ourselves. Chavez has better defense than williams imo but for arguments sake ill give it to you.
Pavlik had next to no movement and workrate against martinez and was able to neutralize anything martinez did in the middle rounds. Chavez has a shot. Not saying he'll beat him for sure but im definitely sure it wont be a beatdown like you think.
He's a strong JWW. That's about it He's not a very good boxer. Herrera beat him handily.
So is he more of a brawler?? Do you you have any video of him???
You seem to forget something here. Martinez fought against a guy who has decent defense. Junior blocks punches with his face. Martinez is unorthodox in his style and would easy stop junior by 9th rd, if it goes that far.
So you're gonna shortchange chavez for what he lacks in defense but makes up for in offense and size???
Martinez is gonna have to punch up against chavez like he did against williams. but chavez wont leave his chin exposed.
Because Boxing is much more of an entrepreneur sport unlike any other. This is a very good video discussion of Boxing that I think explains a lot of what we have talked about in this thread.
Although Boxing and Golf are both individual sports they have polar opposite participants. Boxing is a poor mans game.
Rich man, poor man's game is irrelevant. Point is if the fighters in the opening article are truly representative of the success of boxing as a sport then similarly ranked fighters should enjoy similarly proportional success but its just not the case. Even within the same division. Amir khan for example would be able to draw close to 100,000 people in england while tim bradley would be lucky to sell 2 and a half tickets in his hometown even though they enjoy the same level of professional success.
Boxing doesn't work like that, income is proportional to popularity not rankings. Doesn't change the fact that boxing is one of the most popular sports in the world which is the point of this thread.
one of the most popular sports in the world based on what exactly??? The success of a select few??? Like I said originally....you're talking about less than 1% of the athletes within a sport and using them as a representation of the sport as a whole. So what if floyd and pac set ratings records??? One could just as easily point out any number of fighters that struggle to fill high school gyms despite being a world champion as proof that boxing is dying.
I agree but those global figures are truly startling and the only other sport that can do better than those is Soccer.
Well that's 5 fighters that enjoy massive success. Problem is....how many boxers are there??? You're talking about less than 1% of athletes within a sport being representative of the overall success of the sport as a whole.
I can give this fight the benefit of the doubt for this reason even with the shady circumstances.
What is hard to believe is the Mosley fight. Mosley who basically has no fanbase and just came off a schooling from Floyd is going to get him 1.34Mil? If they really did 1.34Mil, HBO should have officially released. That would have been the highest numbers at the time ever since May-DLH and manny's record. Many people were saying Mosley was **** and gassed out after only 2 rounds after Mayweather beat him. That doesn't sound like an appealing opponent for someone ranked as high as manny.
That's because the mosley fight was on showtime. Not hbo. Showtime having been out of the ppv game for over a decade did not have as comprehensive count system as hbo.
Showtime however released a statement that they believed those numbers could have been higher but was as accurate of a count as they could get.
OF COURSE HE DOES!
Arum CREATED MANNY PACQUIAO! Manny couldn't leave Arum even if he wanted to do so, he is stuck in a SLAVE DEAL!
How did arum create manny pacquiao when pac was already a 3 division world champ with wins over barrera and morales before he ever hooked up with arum.
If anything its juan manuel marquez that owes his career to arum.
You dont believe floyd hand was injured? I can believe it. Its been a big problem for him for most of his career.
for a guy with a busted hand he didnt have any problems throwin uppercuts with it or show any pain when it landed repeatedly.
How about this. Im from san jose ca, they have small shows ocassionaly. Nothing big. Biggest card ive seen put on here was andre ward's 13th fight against some scrub, co heaslined by antillon vs bobby pacquiao.
But there are 4 boxing gyns, 2dozen mma gyms that also teach boxing, and I have some buddies that teach boxing at local rec centers to at-risk kids. So a very substancial percentage of the population has some degree of boxing training. Would we be considered a boxing town??
Be more specific .
He refused to fight hagler for 3years and still refused to fight him without a bigger ring. He also made lalonde put up his 175lb title at a weight limit of 168lbs.
According to the dumbass logic you apply to pac then leonard is in fact not a great fighter but the definition of a ducker
If a Barrera rematch did happen though, it should have happened sooner. Barrera was past his prime and not even that good anymore by the time 2007 rolled around. He struggled like hell to beat Juarez in 2006.
And yet he beat juarez with ease in the rematch, and would have beaten marquez if they rightfully scored the knockdown for him instead of being docked a point.
The rematch was supposed to happen right after pac-morales 3 but becausr of pac's contract issue he was frozen out from fighting any gbp fighters including barrera. So pac was in limbo for about a year and a half.
LMAO at Pac ducking Cotto :lol1:
Guzman did all he could do get a Pac fight. Even wrote a Goddamn letter. And, in return Pac went to go fight an unnecessary rematch(which BTW it would be what Pac-Cotto II would be now) against Barrera instead of the highly rated title holder in Guzman.
Pac ducked Guzman....It's laughable to say Pac ducked Cotto though.
That rematch was necessary for pac. He was the #1contender for the wbc belt from the time barrera had it but the gbp lawsuit kept him from fighting for it for a year. And since marquez beat barrera in a highly competitive, somewhat controversial fight then pac was forced into a number 1 contender fight instead of jumping right into a title shot.
Beating the odds in hopkins's situation refers to statistics saying a troubled youth with his background saying he'll either be dead or a career criminal. Nothing to do with violence.
A boxing town is considered by how many fans they attract to the stadium/arena/casino.
Even for the smaller shows, if they still attract fans that is considered a boxing town.
But philly is pretty much 1 of the most common examples of a boxing town...yet when was the last time they had a big show there??
And what about smaller towns like youngstown ohio or lowell massachusetts that have boxing gyms on every corner but just dont have fights put on there.
No it was not necessary at all. He wasn't force into anything. You act like JMM wouldn't have fought him if he wasn't his mandatory...GTFOH. That rematch was totally unecessary plus Guzman also had a title. He could had fought Guzman and then unify with JMM in the next fight. But, no, he chose to fight a way past prime fighter that was coming off a loss instead of an undefeated highly ranked title holder.
Lol @ Pac ducking Cotto.
War unnecessary rematches
Oh cmon man. It was completely necessary and it had nothing to do with whether or not marquez would fight him. It had to do with barrera at the time being just as deserving as pac at a shot at marquez. Barrera had just lost a very competitive fight that he wouldve won if the knockdown he scored had counted. Although barrera was past his best he was still very much considered elite and still ranked 5th p4p by ring magazine at the time of the pac rematch. Guzman at best was very promising yet largely irrelevant at the time. Especially with his ko% becoming almost non existant after moving up from 126.
he handicapped somebody?
Dude was rambling about pac not being able to beat cotto without handicaps so therefore he ducked him yet srl is a great fighter when he imposed all sorts of supposed handicaps on hagler or he wouldnt fight, and made lalonde put up his light heavyweight belt at a weight limit an entire division below.
Pac did duck Guzman at 130.
LMAO at Pac ducking Cotto though.
How??? Didnt guzman just lose to barrios around the time pac beat barrera for number 1 wbc contender???
Dont going throwing numbers you dont understand , the most import fact is that Pac " forced 145 " or NO FIGHT , if you think it didnt matter because a year earlier he weighed 146 and looked like crap then Team Pac obviously thought it did matter , a lot , and logic says , that if they were prepared to " walk out " of the fight if they didnt get it , then they must have concluded they could not win without it !, there is no other answer !
And the proof of all that is , is he just walked out on the same " man " because he could not CW him again , your proof is right there !!!! , you really dont have a solid leg to stand on because your arguing innuendo and opinion and disregarding the meat in the sandwich .
Just out of curiosity...what are your thoughts on sugar ray leonard??
