As much as I think Cotto should be rematching Clottey or Margarito next, there is no doubt Cotto has balls. He took Margarito and Clottey within the timespan of one year, and both of those guys were avoided like the black plague.
This is pathetic, Margarito beat Cotto fair and square until proven differently. Besides, in that fight with Mosely no one could have taken the shots the way Marg did for 9 rounds. Had Cotto eaten those shots he'd have been gone in the first 2 rounds. Cotto couldn't deal with the pressure against Marg. The key to beating Margo is to clinch when he gets inside, stop him before he starts to smoke. Cotto neglected to clinch, he got annhilated for his negligence, but not before he put up one hell of a fight that should surely go down as one of the best Rican/Mexican battles.
It depends on the fighter. For someone like Ortiz or Cotto perhaps it was better for them to call it quits and live for another day. For someone like Margarito quitting would crush his pride. Perhaps the physical deformities after a bad beatdown like that aren't as bad as the mental shame of having quit. It's all to the fighter, the fans shouldn't knock them either way, despite there opinion every fighter deserves respect.
Cotto is a warrior and a very exciting fighter. As much as I dislike all the Pacquiao nuthugging I have to say this argument isn't very good. Cotto looked less than stellar in his victory of Mosely, got a gift decision against Clottey, and got blistered by Margarito.
Both Floyd and Mosely turned him down in 2006. Obviously Mosely didn't have any problems taking a fight with Margarito when he was on top though.
Patiently awaiting the return of the Tijuana Tornado.
As a Margarito fan, i've been saying for awhile now that the key to beating Margarito is the clinch. I think there was more to the Mosely fight than just the clinch but I do believe that it was the main reason he lost that fight.
The problem lies not just in Pacquiao vs. Mayweather as it does Cotto vs. Marquez though. Mayweather and Pacman are both big draws, however I feel Cotto is a much larger draw than Marquez.
In my opinion Marg edged out Williams by a round but I can see a draw or possibly a one round victory for Williams. Pavlik is going to trouble Williams like Margarito. However i don't think Pavlik has the chin and heart of Margarito. I'm rooting for Williams but won't be surprised if Pavlik wins it.
I am a fan of Cotto, Clottey and Diaz. I felt that Clottey won the fight against Cotto, but agree that it could be seen in favor of Cotto. However as a Diaz fan I could not see in anyway how he won that fight, ecspecially by as wide a margin as the scores had it.
Margarito lost what in my eyes should have been a draw against Paul Williams. He was robbed in his fight against Santos where he was at a large weight disadvantage. He beat Cotto, Cintron 2, Clottey, Martinez,Lujan and although he put up a poor effort, he has Mosely on his resume as well.
Cotto however is no slouch, with names like Torres, Malinaggi, Quintana, Margarito, Mosely,Judah and Clottey. Now factor in an extremely close fight with Mosely, gift decision over Clottey, and a beatdown from Margarito.
I think Margarito has the better resume.
I'm a big fan of both of these guys. I've said for a long time now that the key to beating Marg is to clinch him. Cotto could have beat Marg and still can, he has to clinch. Assuming what Clottey has said about the two guys strength in comparison to one another I would believe that Cotto could clinch Marg up the majority of the time. Cotto will never beat Margarito in a brawl, Marg walks through everyone's punches, Mosely's clinch took Marg out of that fight. If Mosely stood and traded punch for punch he'd have been out just like Cotto. The only person in the welterweight divison who can stand right in front of Margarito for 12 rounds without clinching is Clottey because of his tight defense, sturdy chin, and size, all other welterweights need to clinch him or they are in trouble.
In 2010 Margarito will be back in the picture, and everyone will be using his plaster fiasco as an excuse to duck him. They have no proof he ever used the plaster, the division and other fighters fanboys are just looking for reasons to avoid him. If i were Cotto i would want revenge in a fight to redeem myself, not say Marg doesn't deserve a paycheck. That sounds like a man in fear. There is money for Cotto in a Marg fight, he simply wants no part of Margarito. It's better he not fight Marg and lead people to believe Marg cheated than to lace em up and get whooped again removing the doubt of the first fight.
Floyd is the one fighter whom I always thought would trouble Margarito. Marg's achilles heel is the clinch. I figured Floyd would do similar to what Mosely did, punch Marg on his way in then clinch once he's inside. However I didn't see Marg getting knocked out.
Margarito is going to be trouble for anyone. Even Mosely if he can avoid the clinch.
I'm glad he's going. It will be nice to see and hear from him since the plaster scandal broke. I hope he lands the winner of the fight. I think he'll be back and more relentless than ever. I'm not buying that he's been using plaster because he'd have been caught along time ago, however plaster or not, his chin, heart, and pressure won him those fights more than anything special in his wraps.
There is a good chance he'll hunt down the winner and try to get a fight with them upon his return.
However i wonder how his presence might linger on Cotto. Cotto wants no part of Margarito.
I don't think in most cases boxers are afraid of their opponents as much as they are simply losing the fight. Realizing they are back to square 1 after all their hard work, time, and dedication. However with that being said, I have never seen anyone look as scared as Mike Spinks was when he fought Mike Tyson. He was terrified.
I remember Diaz from his 2002 fight with Antonio Margarito, although he lost he put up a valiant effort. I was looking forward to seeing him fight again as I thought his style was appealing, i hope even without Zab he stays on the card.
