There are many ways out of a fight. Corner can throw the towel in, You can not make the 10 count. Or referee can stop it on your feet. Quiting on your stool is a sign of weakness ..
DLH quit..he's close to being a Billionaire..seems like a winner to me
Vazquez quit..He's in the top 10 P4P list..seems like a winner to me
JCC quit..He's known as a Top 50 ATG..seems like a winner to me
Cotto quit..He's the WBO champ..just beat Clottey..and is on his way to fighting the Number 1 P4P fighter in the WORLD..seems like a winner to me..
the list can go on and on!!!..Quitting and Losing doesn't mean it's the end..he might lose the respect of many..but IMO..he's only human..and he's allowed to make his own decisions and mistakes and deal with the consequences..
But bottomline..I'm still a fan of Ortiz..and If he continues to fight on..I'll still anticipate his matches and root for him..a humble young man who went from rags to riches a lil too quick was overwhelmed by his own hype..he should come back with a new demeanor and should be well on his way back on the same road he was on prior to Saturday..with the right training and mentality of course!..
Vazquez - had his nose pushed to the other side of his face and couldn;t breath. Breathing is an essential part of boxing. If you can't breath through your nose then you haev to keep your mouth open. Keeping you mouth open makes your much more vunerable to getting KO'd and further injury.....
Osacr De la Hoya- Was getting pumbled for 8 rounds he had no chance to win the fight and his corner was going to stop the fight so was the reff...The reff told him serveral times Oscar show me something and he couldn't. They did not want to stop it because he is a ATG and a ICON iin the sport but eventually he was convinced to retire on his stool. BIG difference is he had no shot at winning that fight and never even hit Pacquiao with one really solid shot. 8 rounds to 0 he would have had to score a KO. More punishment made nosense at all....
Cotto- He took more punishment in that fight then alot of boxers take in their entire carrers. He was on his bicycle from round 1 and throwing tons of punches expedning lots of energy. He absorbd alot of hard shots to the body much like Meldrick Taylor did against JCC. By the time he took a knee he had nothing left to give. The man fought a hard fight and was probably taking shots all night long from loaded wraps. I was watching the fight and I thought the ref should have stopped it after the first knockdown....
When you are a fighter you are a different kind of animal the fans are very demanding. The things that are expected of you are sometimes ridiculous but you know all this going in and you expect to get hurt it is part of the sport. We all have seen young fighters come up and we have the usual questions,
Does he have the stamina to go 12 rounds?
Can he take a punch?
What is he going to do when faced with an opponent that won;t fold?
How is he going to react when he is hurt?
These are all normal questions and they are part of this sport we know and love. When you are a fighter you are the last known form of a gladiator. You fight for sport and a purse. You do thing to your body that most would cring at even the thought and you push it further. Sure you can ask of these so called fans what right do they have to say what they say about their favorite gladiators. The simple answer is when you fight for a purse you have to think about who is providing you that purse and in what manner you will have to perform to earn it. You can't expect to go into every fight and roll over your opponent. There are going to be times like Saturday night when you seem to be the favorite and you know what you are going to get tested in front of those so called fans. Ortiz gave us a great show but wehn some of those for mentioned questions where asked of him he gave us the wrong answers or maybe just tyhe answeres we didn't want to hear....All in all he is a good young talent but maybe he learned something about himself Saturday that he didn;t know going in......you can never critisize someone until you walk in their shoes but anytime somweone is performing for money and you are the one buying tickets and PPV then you can excersize your right to speak then and not buy what they are selling.....Lefty

You make a decent argument...and all i see with valid points. IMO I cant stomach quitting. Like i said in the start of thread...there are many ways to pull out. You have to know that your fans that pay your salary are watching. Before i quit I would want my corner to step in or Not make it up for a ten count. Or let the ref stop it....If you quit in front of thousands you got to expect upset fans. I see your point though.
at the end of the day..a quitter never wins and a winner never quits. Call it what you want...It is what it is.

Nobody goes in to the ring saying.."If I get hit hard enough I'll QUIT!"..
Once you get hit hard enough..time and time again..that's when you consider it I'm sure..Like I said..you're only at home criticizing another mans decision..you have your opinion..just like I have mine..but at the end of the day..that's all they are..opinions..If you were to repeatedly take Maidana's shots to the face you'd know where Ortiz stood..til then..you're just another guy trying to knock the decision of another man...Who was actually..really still a 22 year old KID!..
at the end of the day..a quitter never wins and a winner never quits. Call it what you want...It is what it is.

People know what the risk are before they get in the ring. There is people out there that will kill you in that ring. If youre not prepared to die...you dont need to get in the ring. Quitting shouldnt be a factor.
People are entitled to their own mind but that just tells you what kind of person you are dealing with....I am from the I CAN's....I can win... I can do it... I can work harder... I can run faster... I can loose weight.... I can stop smoking.... I can learn... I can go back to school....I can be a better parent to my children.... I can be a better husbad to my wife.... you have the I CA':s....then you have the I CAN'TS.........I am not from that group....but they do exist but often they diguise themselves in public and only show there true colors when someone from th I CAN's is put in front of them ....Maidana eis an I CAN......Think about Kelly Pavlik and the first fight with JT if he quit he wouldn't be MW Champ right now would he....I think he was hurt much worse in that fight then Ortiz was Saturday night....He hung in there and came back to KO JT....Lefty

a boxer should never quit, but his corner should know when to throw in the towel.
It depends on the fighter. For someone like Ortiz or Cotto perhaps it was better for them to call it quits and live for another day. For someone like Margarito quitting would crush his pride. Perhaps the physical deformities after a bad beatdown like that aren't as bad as the mental shame of having quit. It's all to the fighter, the fans shouldn't knock them either way, despite there opinion every fighter deserves respect.

It's a situation you won't know how it is until you're in that position...
Hyprocrisy is the MAIN reason I hate these threads..because..at one point or another you've quit on something..something that could have been to good benefit for you and your life..so does that make you bitchmade?...now imagine..I'd say about 95% of the people who thought about that shit they quit didn't involve you having a KNOT under your left eye and a big CUT above your right one..and some lil asian looking Argentinian swinging HARD BLOWS..NON STOP trying to literally BEAT THE SHIT OUTTA YOU!!..
When you're done..you're done..different people have a different tolerance for pain, defeat, mental weakness, etc but we ALL possess these weaknesses no matter to what degree..
Ortiz went out there and got BEAT..he admitted he was hurt and only he knew what that was like for him..so him continuing in fear, pain, and suffering wouldn't have done him any better..he still lost..he was beaten by a guy he should've have easily beaten..but since he felt he gave his all and dude kept coming he figured nothing would work..so might as well call it there..PERIOD!..

Yeah but none of us chose the profession of pugilist did we? none of us chose to make a living as a professional fighter...I hear what your saying none of us can know what it feels like because none of us are in the position but you can't make that comparison...it's apples and oranges.....I mean do you think the man in your sigi (Marquez) would have quit???
But that doesn't take away human instinct or tolerance...these are still human beings who feel pain, fatigue, and BLEED!..
Marquez probably wouldn't quit cuz he's a MUCH MUCH smarter fighter..he wouldn't put himself in the positions Ortiz put himself in..
Another thing we have to realize is..Ortiz is still a KID!..he's 22!..I'm 22!..lol..I don't know what I'd do in his position..for 1 it was dramatically overwhelming for him..he's a simple kid who's had a rough life..so this is all new to him..and it got to his head..2nd he has never EVER been hit like that!..OVER AND OVER..especially when he's use to getting them out early..
Imagine if you were 22..a HOT YOUNG PROSPECT who came from nothing..and you're looked at as the next DLH!..
Now by this time you have all the faith in the world for your own skill and POWER!..now you HIT this guy with ALL you got..I mean the CLEANEST, FLUSH most POWERFUL shots you can give..and the man still gets up..and PUNISHES you BACK OVER and OVER!!..he felt he lost his momentum..and lost the faith in himself..he knew he was either gonna get KTFO! or get the towel thrown in..and the pain he was probably in..he didn't wanna take his chances!..lol
It's like my mom used to say, better to kneel and fight another day than to win the appreciation of some moron and end up losing the motor skills necessary to wipe your own ass.
It's a situation you won't know how it is until you're in that position...

Quitting is for fighters who don't believe in themselves. Ortiz was clearly winning on the score-cards yet he felt like the man in front of him was too much for him to handle. He disgraced Kansas definitely.
