Eddie Futch helped Frazier and Norton develop a strategy to beat Ali. If you could out think Ali in a boxing ring you have my respect. He trained 20 champions including Bob Foster, Joe Frazier, Ken Norton, Alexis Arguello, Marlon Starling, Virgil Hill, Wayne McCullough, Michael Spinks, Larry Holmes, and Riddick Bowe.
When Soto was walking to the ring and Jim Lampley mentioned that Soto was raised in a cardboard house, that his father was a bus driver, and that he started fighting to earn enough money to buy a bus, I was thinking that Juarez was in for a tough night.
There is a theory going around that Wlad started to suffer anxiety attacks after the Sanders fight. One of the symptoms of these attacks is shortness of breath. This would certainly explain his lack of stamina.
This is just a conjecture. There is no hard evidence that I know of to back it up.
Some would argue but I agree PPV ruined the beloved sport of boxing!
But How in the hell did WWE get so damn popular and they also have ppv?
This is a very good question and I think I have a partial answer. Wrestling markets to kids. When kids are interested in a sport they drag their parents along. These kids also grow up to become adult fans.
Wlad is a better fighter of the two brothers..
He's ugly style was doing the job for him and more until Stewart thought he could change him to fight "American"
That's where all Wlad's problems began...!
And will people stop saying he has a bad chin!
Sanders cought him with a HUGE left and Wlad never recovered.. Things like that happen in the heavies you know
In the Brewster fight.. he ran out of gas trying to finish brewster off.. Everyone makes mistakes... Same thing happened to Castillo when he was trying to finish Diego.
I thought Stewart started to work with Wlad after the Sanders fight. Is this incorrect?
is ricky hatton signed to showtime? that could stop the match from happening ive even heard that hatton's contract has run out wiv warren is that true :S?
I believe that Showtime no longer signs fighters to multi-fight contracts.
Baseball and basketball market themselves as wholesome family entertainment. I take my son to the ballgame but not to the fights (In fact, the casino here won't let minors into the fights). When I go to the baseball game with my son I feel like a good father. When I go to the casino without my family to watch boxing I feel kind of selfish. I think that the fact that boxing is not family friendly accounts for its low popularity.
There's always the possiblity of giving a standing 8 count in the pros. Most refs just aren't good enough to give it. They think they should just stop it immediately, which is their call either way. I think Diego spitting out his mouth piece will be VERY interesting. I mean, the ref can't play dumb(BTW, whose reffing this fight?), he knows that Corrales is doing it on purpose the first time he drops it. So what's a ref gonna do? Stand there like an idiot and say, don't do it again while letting Corrales get it washed again and take time, or piss many many people off and disqualifying him immediately? Diego probably knows he can't do it again, though also knows, the ref will be very angry with the fans if he stops the fight due to that. I can't wait! :D :boxing:
Under the unified rules of the Association of Boxing Commissions there is no standing eight count. Back to you Jim!
This is horrible news. Kassim Ouma had the same bug during his last fight. It seems to attack people who are not prepared for big challenges. I hear a lot of college students with drinking problems get it right before Calculus exams.
When I was young we blamed failure on lack of preparation and/or talent. This new theory that failure is a virus is liberating!
Note to self: Never shake hands or share a 7up with unemployed brother-in-law who lives in parents' basement.

I think that both fighters should give a spare mouthpiece to the ref and the ref should keep these in his pocket. If a mouthpiece falls out, the ref can put the spare in. End of problem.
yeah i saw the Griffith/Paret when he got killed, it was brutal. trapped in the corner his head under the top rope, while Griffith pounded away. What the hell was the ref doing.
Also i know no one died in this one but Norton/Ali was sad to see too.
Did you mean Holmes/Ali?
Wow I never knew about that, thanks for dropping that bit of info....Is this fact or heresay though? Either way makes a great story.
I just remember reading about this after the fight. Like you said, it's a great story that you don't forget. Maybe someone else can confirm or deny it.
More generally, can someone confirm that the new champ takes pictures with the belts, eventually gives those belts back to the old champ, and is then given new belts?
I always wondered about this. The second Lewis/Rahman fight shed some light on the situation. When Lewis beat Rahman he was given the belts in the ring. He was supposed to carry them off to the dressing room (this makes for good pictures) and then give them back to Rahman later. Rahman would have some souvenirs of his brief reign and Lewis would get a new set of belts. The story at the time was that Lewis would not give the belts back. There was some real bad blood between the two.
I'm really sick of the profanity and childishness around here. Coralles/Castillo I was one of the best fights I have ever witnessed. I was lucky to see it. I don't think of either man as a cheater. Both men fought so bravely that in the end it was almost difficult to watch the fight. Boxing history is full of fighters who spit out their mouthpieces or fail to make weight and then quit. Pick on those fighters and leave Corrales and Castillo alone.
I was sitting ringside at the fight. Powell really seemed to tire in the last two rounds. Powell's brother won by TKO in his pro debut on the undercard. Steve Farhood is a really nice guy. He was chatting with fans throughout the evening.
My rule of thumb:
If you spit out your mouthpiece in one of the best fights I've seen in my life then that's good.
If you spit out you mouthpiece and then quit later in the fight that's bad
Remember that Popo was outboxing Chico during their fight until Popo got caught with a heavy bomb which slowed him down.
Freitas was jumping around the ring and Chico was patiently walking him down. The fact that Freitas was winning before Chico caught up with him means nothing. I could enter the NYC marathon and outrun the winner for the first 100 yards. So what?
Yeah I know that means nothing, so what's your problem? Did you read the whole post and what I driving at,WISE ASS?
I was mere mentioning that to be a refference in that Popo/Morales match up being mentioned. Morales is a boxer and Popo can box better so that will give people an idea and a good perception of how the fight might come out.
Now learn how to read and understand before you butt in, okay?
There is no need for profanity. I did not intend to get you so upset.
Pythagoras.
Greek mathematician, philosopher, and according to Diogenes Laertius:
"But Eratosthenes says, as Favorinus quotes him, in the eighth book of his Universal History, that this philosopher, of whom we are speaking, was the first man who ever practised boxing in a scientific manner, in the forty-eighth Olympiad . . . "
