Losing the mouthpiece at key moments

I can recall three times this happened in fights I actually care about. Let's review: 1. Hasim Rahman vs. Oleg Maskaev In the 6th round, Rahman has Maskaev reeling from a pair of left hooks, and Maskaev loses his mouthpiece for the second time in the fight, this time on the verge of being dropped. Is it okay that Maskaev did this to save himself from being KO'ed? 2. Acelino Freitas vs. Diego Corrales Freitas loses his mouthpiece three times after being dropped repeatedly by Corrales. He is penalized a point for excessive loss of the mouthpiece and gets stopped anyway. Is it okay that Freitas tried to buy himself some time? Why didn't it save him from being KO'ed by Corrales? 3. Jose Luis Castillo vs. Diego Corrales Corrales spits his mouthpiece out twice after being dropped by Castillo twice. Corrales rallies to stop Castillo in the next 30 seconds. How was he able to win where Freitas was not? Are Maskaev and Corrales both undeserving of the victories they got? Interested in your responses. When is it okay to lose the mouthpiece? When it's someone you hate on the receiving end of it? When it helps a fighter you dislike win a fight? When is it okay and when is it not, BoxingScene?

Mike Tyson is a real man! Buster knock Tyson's mouthpiece right out of his mouth and what tyson do, before trying to get up he was looking for his mouthpiece and put it in.(all hanging out but it was in lol)i dont care if corrales took the mouthpiece out cause he was penalized for it. o well hat goes around come around now ppl are saying castillo cheated cuz of the wieght :cool:

I think it's fine to do it as long as the referee penalizes you after the third time you do it like he did Freitas. If you don't support it, then don't support Trinidad's low blows or anybody clinching when they're about to be KO'ed. Y'all are a bunch of hypocrites. You didn't just compare clinching to spitting out your mouthpiece did you? Oh sweet lord you did. If Chico would have clinched, and then recovered, and knocked him out, noone would care. Just for that fact alone it is uncomparable to spitting the mouth piece. Also you don't get penalized for clinching, just excessive clinching. Clinching itself isn't illegal, it is part of boxing. Spitting out the mouth piece is like laying down and saying WAIT TIMEOUT IM HURT which is not what I expect from a fighter. Although I'm not condoning what Castillo did, Chico did CHOOSE to fight him. In doing so it gave away any excuse if he lost in my eyes, Castillo didn't say oh yeah during this fight go ahead and throw out your mouth piece. Also curious, what were the actual weights at fight time again? Well theres my 2 cents on this issue, and I think I did a good job finishing this issue off. Your welcome. :)

My rule of thumb: If you spit out your mouthpiece in one of the best fights I've seen in my life then that's good. If you spit out you mouthpiece and then quit later in the fight that's bad

tying up another fighter and ditching your mouth piece are different. low blows are also cheap.

It's never ok to spit out the mouthpiece on purpose. It pissed me off when Frietas did it against Corrales and Barrios. It pissed me off when Corrales did it against Castillo as well.

Yeah, but one thing to remember - we're not talking about low blows. What Corrales did wasn't a lowblow. He purposefully spit out his mouth piece to buy more time to recover from the punch he took...and as you said he got penalized. What Castillo did was come in too heavy (I highly doubt it was on purpose, but I don't know that for a fact.) The thing is, Corrales chose to fight on - he didn't have to. Emmanuel Burton said it best in the interview he had, "if you're going to choose to fight despite the other guy coming in too heavy and you get your ass knocked out - don't complain about it after the fact." Regardless, Castillo was punished just as Corrales was punished for cheating, different circumstances, but both were punished nonetheless..and both cheated. I got another question, though. If Castillo landed that left hook after weighing in at 135lbs (at the weigh in) would Corrales be able to recover? Jack, is this you?

Corrales got penalized during the fight. if you low blow a guy, it isn't cheating. it means you lose a point. what Castillo did was not only disgraceful to the sport, it was downright dangerous. Corrales was penalized, and a point was taken off. Castillo was penalized, and he was denied the chance to win the championship. Both men cheated, both men were penalized.

i think its alright to buy yourself time if you think your about to lose, you should do ANYTHING it takes to win weather its legal or not! its smart to spit your mouthpeice out if you are in trouble of being ko'ed!

undeserving, no, but there will always b disscusion and controversy over these. i cant wait for the III castillo corrales fight, after each of them took and advantage in an illegal way in the past 2

DiegoFuego, this is completely off-subject, but isn't what you say hypocritical? I mean when Diego cheated he got punished for it, but still won the fight. When Castillo cheated, he got punished for it, but still won the fight. Why do you bash Castillo for what he did, but say nothing about Corrales and what he did? Is it because you're a Corrales fan?
