Of course Byrd is scared. Last time they fought Wladimir slapped him around the ring for 12 rounds. Byrd doenst wanna go through that again. Byrd knows that without title he isnt anything so he wants to keep it and fight Monte Barrett. Or was it Micheal Grant?
Trevor berbicks was pretty bad, explaining the Tyson defeat. He blamed it on sedating medication or something.
I think Berbick claimed that Don King pumped poison gas to his hotel room the night before fight :D
How about Bob Fitzimmons (or however it's spelled). He knocked out many heavyweights and I remember reading that he even killed some guy with one punch.
Yeah, the fight wasnt anything like Gatti/Ward but it was pretty intense brawl nonetheless. It was great fight in my opinion. But I think the ref let Benn get away with lot of rabbit punching.
He was middleweight champ in early 90s who got permanently injured in brutal bout with Nigel Benn. McCellan had truly uncanny punching power....one of the hardest hitters ever.
I think its a bit more of other fighters as well not being too keen on the idea of fighting Calzaghe, Joe just gives them brillant excuses to avoid him. Its shame, i think Joe Calzaghe, if he put it all together for a superfight has the ability to do to Hopkins what Roy Jones did to him in 1993. He seems to have hid behind Frank Warren his whole career and i think Warren is a major reason for his lack of exposure to major fights. Calzaghe can run his mouth all he wants. if he really wanted to fight the big name fighters he`s break his ties with Warren and fight for peanuts on New York undercards, then he`ll get a fight!
There no way in million years that Galzaghe could outbox Hopkins like Roy did. His only change is to turn the fight into brawl and how many fighters have done that to Bernard?
I think Golota deserves the title shot simply because he is one of the few heavyweights that are entertaining to watch. He is good all-round fighter and that is very rare in today's heavyweight division. I think he will dismantle Lemon Bumster rather easily and hopely that will open him a change to take on the other champions.
Foreman is different story. When Foreman retired for the first time, he had taken very little punishment (the Lyle fight was the only fight where George received bad beating) and was in good shape unlike Bowe who was already completely shot fighter and probably brain damaged. Hell, Bowe probably took more punishment in Golota fights than George did in his whole career.
I think Toney (or his manager) wants to take safe fight after his serious injury. And with the win, he will became Vitali's mandatory. So he doesn't wanna risk anything. I remember Jirov saying that if he cant get top10 opponent, he wont fight anybody. Gotta respect that. I quess he is looking for that big fight.
Yep, that´s a very good article. Hopkins is without doubt the greatest boxing mind of our era. He has all the skill in the world but his brains are what makes him so great.
I think Frazier would knock Norton out inside 6 rounds. Norton has suspect chin and he doesn't have the tools to keep Frazier off his skin. Norton was stylistically terrible matchup for fighters like Ali and Holmes but he never could cope with big punchers and pressure fighters. Styles makes fights ;)
Big George would destroy Vitali. In his prime he was master at cutting off the ring. In his autobiography The Greatest, Muhamad Ali recalls that his original game plan was to box Foreman from distance but when he realized how good George was at cutting off the ring, he came up with the rope-a-dope plan. IMO that is real testament to Ali's greatness.
Chris Byrd in an interview with Boxing writer Tim Smith, called WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko a joke. He said that Danny Williams was nothing more then a punching bag and he hopes to get Vitali in the ring again. details]
That's pretty hard talk from a man who has never knocked out anybody :D
