Kovalev is a pretty good fighter. I can't take that away from him. However, he does not fit the build of a typical African American elite boxer.
Kovalev is putting the white boxer back on the map. He fought Andre much closer than I thought he was capable of doing. Kovalev will bounce back just not against Ward. Ward will be acclimated to the weight class in a rematch. He's beat Kovalev much easier.
This would be an absolute dream fight for me. Couldn't get any better than this in terms of quality of fight.
I'd say KOvalev would hurt Roy once, expose the glass, and his killer instinct would take over, getting the championship round stoppage. Either that or Roy wins 7-5 8-4 in rounds. Though it is impossible to say one way or the other really because Kova has not shown any signs of being outboxed really.
I don't even see this fight being all that close.
Roy Jones was a super athlete. His athletic ability alone would have Kovalev looking very slow and off balance.
Roy had Floyd Mayweather type speed at Middleweight. Difference is Roy had that type of speed with one punch KO power. In his prime, he was a bad matchup for everybody. He had cat like defensive instincts as well.
Prime Roy was as close to unstoppable as I've EVER seen. At 154, I'd even take Roy over Floyd.
Roy was exceptional. He only lost to Tarver because he was older and had dropped 25 pounds to come back down to the Heavyweight Divison.
Kov is a nice Light Heavyweight. Very solid. But if old man Hopkins can still go 12 with Kov at age 50 then a prime, 25 year old Roy Jones DESTROYS Kovalev in 9 or 10 rounds.
John Ruiz was a bum lets be real. A Wilder-level heavyweight champ, terrible quality.
Lets see Kovalev move up right now and beat Deontay Wilder in his FIRST fight in the division... like Roy did.
Nobody was jumping to fight roy back then.....Chris Eubank even said fighting him would be like suicide...He knew he'd have to war just to have a chance to win...Roy wasn't going to England or Germany to get screwed like he did in the Olympics...Roy was the A side and the draw
Up until he was 35 Jones was only dropped once and 49-1 across 4 weight classes].....people wanna make jokes now because he is a middle aged
In his prime Hall of Famers like Hill, Toney, Hopkins and McCallum could barely win rounds and the other world champions he fought either got embarrassed or knocked out most times....up until he fought Tarver the second time he already had defeated
Kovalev either gets UD by a wide Margin or stopped late fighting Jones from 96-99
Imagine Kov vs Roy jones even just before the first Tarver fight at age 30-33....Still a wide UD....Roy stopped going for the kill when he got older
Good post. Nice education.
You're nuts bro, prime Roy didn't have the stones to fight Nigel Benn or Darius Michaelwhateverthe****, never mind try to spark them. Kovalev's chin is way sturdier than Roy's sandcastle jaw. I think Kovalev would expose that glass.
LOL you obviously didn't follow Roy's career like that. Maybe you're not old enough. It's all good but you really shouldn't post ignorance just to make your point.
At no point and time did Roy duck Nigel Benn or Dariusz Michalsweski. Period.
Since we're in 2015, I'll use the 2015 lingo: Roy Jones was the A SIDE. Michalsweski was the C SIDE. Yet Michalsweski acted like he was the A SIDE. So the fight never happened.
I don't care what version of Roy it is. He gets KO'ed. What we didn't know about Roy back then, was that he couldn't take a punch. Against A Level fighters, you WILL get hit. You all act as if Roy is an ATG. He's not. He's a HOF'mer whose resume is suspect. You guys overrate Roy. You overrate Hopkins. You overrate Floyd. Guess what? I won't play that game. I call things like I see them. SK is too smart to be pot-shotted by Roy for 12 rounds. Roy has NEVER fought a pressure fighter like SK. What he did to Hopkin's was not a fluke because of Hopkin's age. Hopkin's has the upmost respect for him too. He would knock Roy COLD!
The #1 Mayweather hater is also a Roy Jones hater. I’m shocked!
You’re talking about Roy/Bernard/Floyd being overrated, yet you’re overrating the hell out of Kovalev. SMH. Since when did Kovalev become an A Level fighter? Beating a 50 year old and Jean Pascal makes you A level these days?
So let me get this straight… SK would knock Roy COLD, yet he couldn’t knock Pascal or 50 year old Hops COLD? Where’s your logic?
Roy beat James Toney and Bernard Hopkins. They are both A class fighters. He beat Hopkins like 20 years before Kovalev did it. LOL!
Roy fought the one guy that legitimately beat him 3x. Can you say that for today’s fighters? We’re still waiting for Amir Khan to avenge any of his losses.
You’re crazy as hell if you think Kovalev just walks through a young Roy. LMAO! Roy would pot shot Kovalev to death and unlike Pascal/Hopkins/etc… Roy could PUNCH. He’d have Kov on queer street early and finish him late.
Lets see how Kov fairs against Adonis and Ward first before he’s even mentioned in the same breath as Roy Jones.
Disagree there too. Pacquiao 2007-2010 is the greatest fighter since Muhammed Ali even. Unreal. The most electrifying too.
How is Pac the greatest fighter since Ali and Pac has never had outstanding defense? Pac has always been a one sided figher. He's all offense.
That's why Prime Morales spanked his @ss like a baby when they had their career defining fight.
Prime Roy got spanked by no one. Prime Floyd got spanked by no one.
Prime Pac spanked by Erik Morales and beaten up repeatedly by JMM.
Pac is nowhere near Ali's level and nowhere near the greatest fighter since Ali. LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO @ the thought.
The following fighters are all GREATER than Manny "I fake shoulder injuries" Pacqiao:
Ray Leonard
Tommy Hearns
Marvin Hagler
Mike Tyson
Pernell Whitaker
Felix Trinidad
Floyd Mayweather
Roy Jones
Bernard Hopkins
JCC SR
Mike Mccallum
James Toney
etc, etc, etc, etc...
You Pac fans need to lay off the COKE.
Jones was a glass jawed ducker with exception chin-hiding abilities.
Also you want to respond to my comment about the comparison of Kovalev's jab to Dustin Nichols? LOLOLOL :peeright?:
Roy Jones was a glass jawed ducker?
WTF are you talking about. I can't take you serious.
I should have known you were just trollin... carry on.
Not the resume I'm talking about the actual fighter from 2007-2010. He was electrifying, He was the perfect buzz saw of excitement and punches in bunches. If you could design a fighter that would put the people on their feet that would be it. Electrifying.
Arturo Gatti was electrifying as well.
Just wanted to take some time out to congratulate Floyd on an amazing career. He has been an inspiration to me and many others around the world. Thank you for time and time again risking your health for our entertainment and teaching the true meaning of hard work and dedication. It's truly amazing what he was able to accomplish.
For anyone who wishes to comment, please let's keep it positive. If you were not a fan or have a great dislike for him, you certainly have a right to your own opinion, but it would be nice if we could have at least one purely positive thread about the best boxer of our generation. We are all boxing fans, and to that point, I think he deserves praise from each and every one of us.
So what was your favorite Mayweather fight/moment? I'd probably choose the Corrales fight as my favorite.
Thanks for the memories, champ. Wishing you success in the next stages of your life.
TBE!
What a career! I'm out of words tonight. I'm just very happy that I can say I witnessed the "Mayweather era".
Almost two decades of dominance!
Being a Mayweather fan was similar to being a Michael Jordan fan in the 90s.
Mayweather and Jordan set STANDARDS in their respective sports. Fans of Mayweather have been spoiled and happy throughout his reign. The roughest part about being a Mayweather fan was reading the hate from the bigot haters.
Outside of that, it has been a beautiful experience.
My favorite moments as Mayweather fan:
#1 The Chico Corrales boxing clinic. I don't think there has ever been a more impressive and dominating performance in a championship fight featuring 2 undefeated (and dominant) world champions. Mayweather basically showed the boxing world how his career would go from there on out.
#2 Ricky Hatton. It was pure joy to watch Floyd become the first man to KO the Hitman.
#3 Canelo. At this point in Mayweather's career the haters were in their hating prime. Canelo was hyped to the MAX (GGG level hype) going into this fight. And Mayweather basically made it look easy... once again.
Honorable Mention: Jose Castillo rematch. I was just happy as a Mayweather fan that Floyd gave Castillo the rematch. He didn't have to take that rematch. The haters were going to hate regardless. But Floyd proved he had integrity and honor. The same traits that helped him retire undefeated.
It's been real TBE fans... but everything has to come to an end. What a ride!
I have a sneaking suspicion that if someone makes serious noise in the Welterweight division in the next two years, Floyd will make a comeback.
However, if the division stays as average as it is today, we will never see TBE again.
Thanks for a great career and providing your true fans with never before seen greatness.
#TMT4LIFE
Mayweather's style is just so damn beautiful
The average sporting fan can't grasp what Mayweather does in the ring.
To the basic boxing fan all Mayweather does is hold and run. LOL!
To the analytic and focused boxing fan, Mayweather is pure genius in the ring.
I think the 48-0 record pretty much validates the intelligent fight fans.
Team Ward wants to use the Bernard Hopkins blueprint and make all the smaller guys with big names like Golovkin come up to 168.
Like Hopkins made Calzaghe come up to 175 and Pavlik come up to 170.
All the smaller guys? Like who? Chad Dawson called Ward out. Not vice versa. If you're going to call someone out then go to their division.
GGG is SHOOK
Andre Ward said he wants to fight Mayweather at 160.
So I imagine he'll have no problem making 160 for Golovkin too?
Golovkin will go to 168 for a decent payday (Chavez Jr, Froch) but Ward can't draw flies.
Andre Ward is a selfish prima donna who will demand home advantage so he can use a crooked California referee who will permit him to head butt and clamp Golovkin's arms all night.
Ward needs to be a man and fight Kovalev in the fall. Kovalev knows how to avoid head butts now, having fought Agnew and Hopkins, and he's too strong for Ward to hold.
Ward will make 160 for Mayweather because it's financially worth it. Plus he's fighting the #1 pound for pound guy and most popular boxer in the world.
GGG is a relative UNKNOWN in America.
That's the same reason GGG would go to 154 for Mayweather but not for Lara.
Use your common sense.
GGG will go to 168 for Froch but wants catchweight for Ward. Ward is more popular and bigger draw in America than Froch is. Plus Ward already beat a PRIME Froch.
GGG and his fans are SCARED to death of Andre Ward.
#FACTS! #TEAM GGG DON'T WANT IT #COME TO OAKLAND AND GET YOUR ASS KICKED!
John Bobbitt vs his wife.
Nothing more to say.
You're a known "Captain Sav-A-Hoe" around these parts. I can't imagine how many times you've been lied to and cheated on by women. SMH
And you're a Floyd hater/GGG ball rubber on top of that.
Your posting style makes more sense now.
I seriously don't understand this sht, it's just not adding up. This 38 year old Floyd Mayweather Jr guy has had nearly TWO FCKIN DECADES OF P4P DOMINANCE, why are you guys acting like fighters that just started making noise recently (GGG, Brook, Thurman, Khan etc) are entitled to having Floyd prove himself against them?
it just doesn't make sense. That's like a child calling out his grandpa on stuff, you just dont do that. First you prove yourself and earn the respect, sht doesn't come all of a sudden like that. it takes a lot of years, even Floyd went through that phase.
I do understand that these fighters want the paycheck and exposure, but hey, why not work for that sht, make a legacy of your own.
I personally believe Floyd Mayweather Jr has earned the right to fight a damn bum like Berto in a FREE farewell fight. That's just me tho, im different, i am able to formulate my own thoughts, anyways thats another topic...
I'll cut to the chase and give you the real reason why the legions of haters feel Floyd still has to prove himself. Mind you, they won't admit to this but just read in between the lines. I'm guessing this thread will go 20 pages deep and will all lead to one thing:
Mayweather is a dominant African American Boxer that is clearly on his way to GOAT STATUS DISCUSSION.
This frightens the KLANSMEN! They'd rather see Floyd in jail, away from his money and family. They'd rather see him in the HOLE rotting away than see him dominate the sport of boxing.
Now watch all the closeted klansman run in and scream reverse racism towards me. This is just another weak attempt to hide the OBVIOUS truth that most people know.
If Mayweather looked like Ricky Hatton, he'd already be CONFIRMED as the GOAT.
Look at the hype GGG gets. It's unbelievable for a guy that has literally defeated 0 top 25 pound for pound talent.
Contrast that with Mayweather who pretty much just beat the consensus #2 pound for pound guy in his last fight, and he beat another top 10 pound for pound talent two years ago when he defeated Canelo.
But it's not about race right??
And the Charleston massacre was not about race either?
SMH
He's been giving fight fans the finger and laughing at them for years with all his cheating, ducking, and fraudulent ways. Now he's fighting a bum named Andre Berto as a way to have the last laugh.
I hope nobody tunes in to watch that garbage excuse of a circus act and I hope fight fans give him the finger back by showing him that we know he's a cheating scum bag fraud.
Floyd is the true meaning of a disgrace to the sport of boxing.
I'll be watching the KING OF BOXING do what every single champion before him has done: Defend his title against an average contender.
Beating CANELO and PACMAN in a 2 year span is the most impressive feat I've seen in boxing since... I don't know.
When is the last time the pound for pound #1 King of Boxing defeated two top 10 p4p opponents in a 2 year span?
His other career highlights are easy wins over JMM/COTTO/CORRALES/GENARO/HATTON.
Crunched in between those were Zab/Gatti/Maidana...
All hail the KING OF BOXING!
Not even Roy Jones beat as many p4p level fighters in his career.
If anyone deserves a soft touch it's TBE.. the haters can go eat a hyena dYck!
Mayweather they think she can beat, not a man.
I once remember a thread, in which people said Canelo, and Pacquiao could beat Rousey the only one who seemed to lose was against Rousey was Mayweather.
I don't think most people think she could beat other men, I think it's just the lack of respect for Floyd Mayweather.
They called him a coward for 6 years, would could be more disrespectful than saying he would lose to a little white women?
Yet not one MAN has found a way to beat Mayweather in the "manliest" sport in the world. Yet Mayweather is the one being disrespected?
Something is wrong with this picture.
Trinidad was a middleweight champion. Hell even Oscar had a belt and he challenged Bernard. In order for Hopkins to unify the division he had to fight these guys. Hopkins didn't make anyone come up to him they came to him and were already there. Trinidad beat Joppy for a MW title and Oscar got the decision over Sturm.
Likewise, Golovkin is trying to unify HIS OWN division. Cotto is lineal middleweight champion and WBC title holder, you know the belt Golovkin is mandatory to. Of course it's only natural for Golovkin to want the belts in his own weight class (isn't that the point of boxing?). Canelo's last three fights have technically been at middleweight and we all know he's eventually going to campaign at 160, the only question is when. As for a Floyd fight, that's just a dream fight, everyone wants Floyd (even Ward). Who doesn't say they would like to fight Mayweather and earn career high paydays?
How do you duck a guy that isn't in your own weight class? A guy who wasnt even fighting for two years and just made his comeback? That's like saying Ward has been ducking Kovalev.
You make some good points regarding Hopkins/Trinidad/DLH/Middleweight tourney.
I'll give you the Tito argument b/c it is true that Hopkins was not originally supposed to be in the Middleweight tourney. So technically speaking, Trinidad was a Middleweight when they fought.
De La Hoya on the other hand was a clear cherry pick, imo. DLH was not a Middleweight. He nearly had lost his only fight there to Felix Sturm.
Even though Ward and GGG aren't in the same division, it's clear as day there is nobody of worth for GGG to fight.
Cotto is not going to fight GGG at 160. He's already made that clear. Canelo also seems like he's refusing to commit to 160. Both of those guys would rather not face GGG.
So it only makes sense to rise up in weight and take on Andre Ward. Ward wants it after his 2 year layoff. We know he had legal issues so lets stop trying to make it look like Ward just took 2 years off for the hell of it.
If GGG is as great as everyone believes he is then go up to 168 and holla at SOG.
That's what real champions do. I think a catchweight is acceptable as well.
Where are the real Ward fans?
Why don't you guys buy his tickets, why don't you guys watch his fights?
I tell you the answer:
You guys are FAKE Ward fans, most of you are a bunch of racist keyboard warriors who hate GGG for being more popular and more exiciting than any american boxer.
GGG fans have really hit a new low.
Did you even watch Ward's last fight? Or did you just dismiss it because it was on B.E.T? Or let me guess... you don't have B.E.T?
Regardless, the crowd was very star studded. Multiple NBA and NFL stars were in the crowd to cheer S.O.G on.
Ward is more popular in the United States than GGG and FROCH.
Trust and believe, no Ward fan is "jealous" of GGG. We know our man is proven, has legit boxing skills and is headed for the hall of fame.
GGG fans are the insecure ones going on and on about A side vs. B Side, catchweight, etc...

Another elite world champion of color being degraded by fans (with an agenda) and certain media outlets.
Hardcore fans know Ward will wipe his @ss with GGG on B.E.T if need be.
Ward is just another of a long list of champions of color that fight with a defense first style and some so called fans don't like it. Why? Not because his style of boxing is boring but because that style practiced by the right person is unbeatable.
Floyd has proven that. Prime Whitaker proved that. Prime Roy Jones proved that. Prime Hopkins proved that and Prime Andre Ward is proving it as well.
Ironically all of those guys were criticized and degraded heavily by mostly fans of the confederate flag.
They haven't learned tho... you can't stop greatness! Andre Ward will embarass and send GGG back to obscurity when/if they fight. BOOKMARK IT! Just like May 2nd.
The casual fans know what it's really about, they flick the channel, if it isn't going to entertain, they flick to the next. They wont waste their time or money on something that's boring.
While these Phony"hardcore boxing fans" have their heads so far up their a55e5, they act like their ***** don't stink out arenas.
These "Hardcore Fans" that don't stick up for the sport are to blame. We have "fans" bending over letting promoters/fighters take them for their money for stale fights.
Practically handing over their money, siding with the fighter's excuse for failing to entertain, and not sticking up for the boxing fans.
They keep lying to themselves, saying they don't get bored.
It's like they want people to know they enjoy watching paint dry, acting like there's some incredible stuff going on behind the scenes that will give them credibility.
When in reality, they're just sitting there, watching paint dry, wasting time, missing out on what the causals are doing, having fun .
You'll never catch the casual fan doing some dumb ***** like that, they're not that stupid.
Stop lying to yourself, all these fights fit within two extremes
(Boring--------------------watchable----------------------Entertaining)
Where only about 5% of Phony "Hardcore Fans" would say a boring fight entertained them for what ever reason the use to justify it.
Now because the fake fans are not looking for the viewers best interest in "pure entertainment", fights have tipped over to the Boring side because they let fighters get away with it.
These fighters are now using the excuse of not getting hit, even if it cost them the fight. Fights on the line, and they wait it out, if the opportunity doesn't come as a gift-box birthday present, they're ok with it, even if it means loosing the fight.
As a result there's no passion from these fighters. They just come and take the pay check, no entertainment, just a dry transaction, taking you for your money and time.
More butthurtedness from a Mayweather hater... smh...it never ends.
Lets play this game.
What would Ronda Rousey do to GGG in the Octagon?
Since she'd handle Floyd Mayweather, the P4P best boxer in the world for 14-15 years now, with no problem.
Floyd was 37yrs old and outweighed by 17lbs against Marcos. How many Marcos has Ronda faced? How many BERTO's has she faced? She should have never been considered fighter of the year, but because its a female and she buzzing right now, they gave it to her which as a fan of combat sports, I found offensive tbh.

Winner of this thread by far.
I love how you're kickin the real to these SCHMUCKS!
Rousey is fighting other broads with no type of boxing skills or technique. Look at Meisha Tate for example. The chick lunges forward when she punches with chin up in the air.
I love the MMA. Don't get me wrong. But to keep it real, MMA fighters mostly consists of Folkstyle and Freestyle Wrestlers. A rare few actually have hands. Most MMA fighters are ground attackers. We all know most street fights are about HANDS, not ground skills.
Ronda would get knocked cold by Mayweather in the Octagon if Mayweather is taught how to properly defense leg shots and body throws. Ronda's ass is TOAST with NO BUTTER!
Serena Williams is more dominant, Dez Bryant is more dominant, Mayweather, GGG, Amir Imam, more dominant.
But anyway keep schoolin these boys... and I'm having a good ol time reading this ownage.
It doesn't even have to be about A-side/B-side arguments. Golovkin is the one who has to move up and Ward is the one who needs Golovkin.
W/O Ward - Golovkin can fight N'Dam in October, sell 10,000 tix, get 1.5mill tv views, make over a million from HBO another million from international sales.
W/O Golovkin - Ward goes back to BET, fights in front of a paper'd house, gets maybe 500,000 tv viewers, and loses his promoter another $2mill.
LOL! Ward has more options than GGG. Cotto and Canelo aren't fighting GGG any time soon. So GGG can have fun with N'Dam, Lemiux and Andy Lee.
Meanwhile Ward can go up to 175 and fight Kov, Stevenson and even tired as Pascal.
Ward is already proven anyway.
He beat a prime Froch while GGG was trying to fight a retired Froch.
GGG still has to prove himself unlike Ward.
Team GGG wants to use the Bernard Hopkins blueprint at 160 and make all the little guys with big names come up to 160.
Hopkins did it with Tito/De La Hoya.
GGG is trying to do the same thing with Cotto/Canelo/Mayweather while DUCKING Andre Ward and praying he moves up to 175 so GGG can eventually set up shop at 168 after beating the little guys.
Team GGG and his fans would be wise just to STFU about Andre Ward because we all know GGG and his peeps don't want that. They know facing Ward is an instant L.
Ward will have GGG looking like Ricky Hatton after facing Floyd.
Nonsense.
Ward is unpopular and can't draw flies - he had to give away tickets near ringside for his last fight!
In contrast, Froch has sold out a big stadium in London, UK for a PPV fight.
Again, Andre Ward is a bigger draw in AMERICA than Carl Froch is. PERIOD.
Plus, Ward already exposed and beat an UNDEFEARED PRIME Froch.
GGG is trying to fight the burnt out, old version of Froch. GGG is actually everything the Mayweather haters accused Maywearther of being. A cherry picking DUCK!
