Broner has done what he has so far by overpowering guys. His jab is not good at all. Once he faces someone that he can't back up he will have problems. Ponce De Leon is a featherweight who has been drilled by 2 other top featherweights and Broner couldn't hurt him, so Broner didn't look good there. He beat up a few fringe contenders at 130, hasn't even faced anyone at 135, and you are talking about him being the best at 140! WOW! Broner is a puncher. I don't understand why people that see the shoulder roll defense get so caught up with it. There are hundreds of weak boxers all over the east coast that use it. Its just another position, it dont mean nothing. Broner has done his work against top 20 guys in the worst division in boxing. The Demarco fight will be the first right that shows us what kind of fighter he's going to be.
The first 3 and last 3 rounds could easily be Bradley's. Announcers, plus fan noise played a role in people's view of this one. Too many rounds manny wasn't busy and would flurry for 30-40 seconds, fans go bananas, lederman scores to many. Look at bradleys face, he was able to slip a lot of punches that were being scored by compubox as landed.
Hopkins/Cloud is a bad matchup cause we already know what its going to look like...Cloud chasing Hopkins around the ring for 12 rounds. B-Hop landing sneaky right hands and holding, and doing everything in his power to avoiding fighting
I agree 100% with Bob on this one. I Hopkins/Cloud and Mosley/Paulie and both garbage fights and insulting to fans. Nothing exciting lined up in 2013 so far besides this Saturday's card.
plenty of reasons. Hes a man without a country, He was mostly fighting in obscure 8 round fights in Spain well into his 30's. He didn't put on a pair of gloves till he was 19. His first shot vs. a contender he was he outclassed and KO'ed by Margarito. His promoter today wants to act like he should be a superstar cause he's had 2-3 good years, when the household names in boxing today, have been in significant fights for near a decade or longer. He can't get anybody with a name to fight him cause they demand star money, without the star name.
I think its clear that Schaefer is saying that if Khan wins, they will not allow Khan anywhere near Lucas. I don't think Maidana/Matthysse can happen soon since Maidana can't make 140 anymore.
Both guys are top rank fighters and it is actually a great fight. Make it happen after Chakal beats Ramos. Top Rank actually has enough guys at 122 to have a nice tournament.
as awful as Mayweather/Khan sounds lets not forget Oscar DLH took on Yory Boy Campas who had recently been stopped 3 times at a high point in his career after the Vargas fight. Its not the first time a guy does this to stay busy..That being said I won't pay $70 for Floyd/Khan unless there is a major undercard with guys from their stable facing each other, Broner, Guerrero, Garcia, Ortiz, Thurman, Matthysse, Maidana, etc., some of these guys need to me matched up plus Arreola/Wilder
I still think margarito beats Most top guys at 154. He got screwed in the second Cotto fight he was coming on strong. Say what u want about marg cheating, his speed, or whatever else but he's still arguably the toughest, most relentless, and best conditioned fighter of his era. I'm shocked that anyone would think that a bum like kirkland who has proved nothing in the sport and has looked terrible lately would even have a chance against him.
Merchant is out of touch here, fans want competitive fights on HBO, not one sided beatdowns which is what Donaire vs Arce will be. I want Donaire vs Rigondeaux.
Oscar knows that continuing to place all of their chips into Shomtime/Floyd/Haymon's stable is not a good long term plan and GBP's success in the future comes from Alvarez and making big fights vs guys like Cotto, Martinez, Chavez, Froch, etc...GBP doesn't really need Floyd and give him waaay too much leverage at this point in his career
Never happen, Pac and his camp are scared of black american fighters. The lone exception being old, shot Shane. How the hell has someone fought about 60 fights and fought one black american fighter lol? And that one was 40 years old. Below are 11 black american fighters all from the top 10 140-154lb rankings (except Holt) and Pac hasn't gone remotely near any one of them:
Mike Jones
Tim Bradley
Kendall Holt
Andre Berto
Floyd Mayweather
Tim Bradley
Devon Alexander
Lamont Peterson
Zab Judah
Austin Trout
Cornelius Bundrage
Right, i'm sure k9 Bundrage, Alexander,Holt,Judah, and Austin Trout would give Manny Pacquiao hell!!! LMAO! Funniest post ever.
So its the MGM vs Wynn, showtime vs hbo, top rank vs golden boy? I couldn't care less all I know is that the Top Rank event is a better event, a bigger and better fight. GBP better move over especially since Ortiz is still Ortiz and knowing him he might take a Kermit style dive once he feels the pressure
An Old Timers Cruiserweight Tournament of still active over 40 fighters would be perfect. Roy Jones/Montell Griffin/James Toney/Bernard Hopkins. Make it Happen!
Can someone explain to me how hitting a tire with a sledgehammer will help you win a boxing match? I've never been a fan of that type of movement during a training camp.
I dont blame Escobedo for quitting, but he did quit. I don't blame him because he is a bum, and he was completely over-matched from the start. Quitting isn't bad if you are being demolished and have no chance, might as well preserve your health at that point than be a human punching bag just to make your opponent look good. More guys should do it
HBO has about 10 million more subscribers than showtime and it would be 15 million if it wasn't for Homeland. Besides Saul Alvarez most of these Haymon/GBP fighters have no loyal fan bases people just watched them cause they were on HBO(and usually want to see them lose). TR fighters have much more loyal fan bases. TR/HBO/Tecate/TV Azteca are the winner here especially since Showtime will have to deal with Floyd ducking Alvarez for the next couple years
people can say what they want about Margarito now, but when we look back, he has fought everyone! Won some Lost some, but three years ago he was the most feared man in boxing, today he is probably the toughest man in boxing. Overall, he is still a special and memorable fighter, a real throwback, and should be put up there with guys like Gatti, Ward, Holyfield, Hagler, Chavez, Basilio, Lamotta, Chuvalo, Grim, and so many other guys that will be remembered for their toughness.
All I know is that ever since Schaefer came in the picture, the sport of boxing has gone down. Good fights are few and far between and most of the big fights are flops in the ring, and leave a bad taste in the mouths of fans. Schaefer is about the bottom line, doesn't care about the product or about ruining the sport over who's beer sponsor will be on the ring canvas. The new business model that Schaefer wants to use, is good for the fighters, who make more money and take less risk, but in the long term it will turn away fans, and not bring in new ones.
