What did you think of Larry Merchant as a commentator?

As absurd as it may seem, Mayweather was within the rules. Ortiz's preceding headbutt was not, he could have been disqualified then and there by another referee. Mayweather had accepted Ortiz's apologizing, nodded "yes" with his head. Then Ortiz remained there with his arms down. He behaved like an idiot before and after the headbutt. Let's admit this once and for all.
Speaking of referees, Joe Cortez's facial expression during the knockout action speaks for itself. He was looking elsewhere, mouth agape, the same reactivity of someone who has just been hit on the head by a baseball bat...Last edited by Tatabanya; 02-10-2021, 03:37 AM.Comment

Sounds like you are trying to make it right for Froid?
Any way you look at it is still a sucker punch legal or not.Last edited by TJ highway; 02-10-2021, 03:49 AM.Comment

No, I'm not "trying to make it right" for him. Mayweather WAS in his right to do so. Protect yourself at all times. Ortiz was a fool, simple as that. I'd say the same if the fighters were reversed, I'm not a particular fan of either. But that incident established what separates an expert, cold-blooded fighter from an idiot who wanted to play macho first, and purring kitten seconds later.
Does blatantly headbutting an opponent as Ortiz did qualify as sportsmanship for you?Last edited by Tatabanya; 02-10-2021, 04:07 AM.Comment

We still whining about that punch after Ortiz dumb ass headbutt Floyd like a damn billy goat.
Y'all make me feel like if Floyd retaliated vs Judah after those lowblows y'all would have blamed him....
Nevermind.... Y'all didn't hate Pretty boy Floyd.... Y'all only hate Money MayComment

Jim Gray had the infamous interview with Pete Rose before this so the media and fans were angry at him and James Toney was not going to let Gray do the same with him. After that Gray was not doing those ridiculous questions anymore.Comment

Anti-climatic ending. Lets not forget that Ortiz head butted Floyd on purpose which cause a cut and Joe Cortez signal to fight. Ortiz was an 1diot for continuing apologizing and not protecting himself.Comment

I respected his journalistic mind that he brought in the mist of battle. He always had something catchy to say and spoke his mind all the time. He's checked some of the other commentators when necessary and wasn't shy about it (Lennox, lol).
His interviews may be hit or miss for some, but he brought a level of class to the broadcast as well that is missed in today's day. I mean in comparison to that Jim Grey ******** piece of **** *** *******, I think he makes Larry look like a saint, lol.Comment

In boxing, usually the more hate you get from fans the better you are. Merchant pushed people's buttons, which is what a good journalist does.
Boxing is now a fringe sport in the US, so it's covered by "fringe" journalists or fanboys.Comment
