Anyone who doesn't think Holmes was a great fighter, or didn't have heart, or whatever, needs to watch this one round.

Larry Holmes was a all time great, his career after the Mike Tyson loss proved that further more. But as you have stated? Larry Holmes was by no means ancient by the time he fought Mike Tyson 'And had not been retired long at all'.

That was a great win for Mike Tyson, and proves that? Head to head at his peak, Mike Tyson was a immensely dangerous fighter for anybody.

Head to head, fighters such as Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson are some of the most formidable fighters that the game has produced. Evander Holyfield head to head is pretty much competitive with most fighters in history also, those three fighters where incredible.

Mike Tyson knocked out a shot Larry Holmes. Holmes in his prime would have taken him to school. Holmes, greatly underrated Tyson grossly overrated.

Spot on! I will always look upon his career fondly. He fought, and beat everybody in his prime. I will always be grateful to him for the Cooney fight, he caused me win a barrel of money betting on him to win.

After the Tyson fight, Holmes took Holyfield and McCall the distance in world title fights and beat Ray Mercer.

He may have been past his prime when Tyson beat him but he was far from shot. He went 21-3-0 after the Tyson loss and even had a win 14 years later.

              You are correct.
Much of Ali's Parknson's was due to Holmes. He could have won w.o. doing that. And he lies about it ever since.

Perhaps. However, a "shot" Holmes beat Ray Mercer and gave Evander Holyfield a good fight four years after being knocked out cold by Tyson. No one else did that to Holmes, even when he was decrepit.

I agree on Holmes underrated. But no one can say that Tyson was overrated because he never fulfilled his potential, which was huge. We owe this to Don King, one should say.

Curious how people keep justifying Holmes' loss to Tyson with his two-year retirement, then call Tyson overrated on the basis of the final part of his career, where he was physically and mentally finished due to drugs and alcohol.

Some people here don't like facts, you see. According to them, Holmes was dead at 38.

Oh, and I won't even mention Michael Spinks defeating Holmes twice, and losing to Tyson in 91 seconds... Or Carl Williams giving Holmes fits, and being wiped out in half a round by Tyson a little later.

Ah, right, I forgot. Tyson is overrated.

Ok, Tyson fought a Holmes that was coming off the couch. Mercer & Holyfield fought an ACTIVE Holmes. That's the difference. Holmes was diminished fighter in all three cases but in the last two he had better timing and had taken a few punches. Not saying he would have beaten Mike but he probably would have put on a better showing if he had some tune ups.
