I made a thread about this a few years ago

Talk about anything boxing related here. Where the boxing discussion is always Non Stop!

He was a very tough and exciting fighter and a great lovely guy in general, but in my opinion no, he isn't an ATG.

Well, you know how opinions are and I'm damn sure not changing mine. Joe Frazier is and always will be an ATG. I respect your opinion and know where you're coming from, but honestly, I think you may be setting a ridiculously high bar that no one measures up to when you really start to look at it closely. The Arturo Gatti argument doesn't hold water with me. Gatti never beat an ATG like Ali. Gatti never won an Olympic medal. Gatti never really beat the top guys of his day. Gatti brought excitement to the ring without question but he was never considered the best in his division even, that I know about. When Gatti came in, you knew you'd get a great show more than likely but that came based as much on his flaws as his strengths. So no comparison in my opinion. And guys, honestly, that third fight was close and it easily could have gone the other way. Ali told his trainer to cut his gloves after the fourteenth. He lucked out really. Frazier would be willing to die in the ring literally and he proved it. Had he not had trouble with his eyes, I think he would have went further as well.

But as they say, to each their own.

If Frazier is NOT an ATG, then I don't know what is to be honest.

Some ****** points made from Sid-knee overall. Dismissing the Foster win is ludicrous, he was an ATG at 175, and in his prime. Frazier destroyed him with ease in 2 rounds which is what you are supposed to do with a smaller great fighter if you are an ATG yourself, their discrepancy in weight was 20lbs on the night.

He was THE MAN at heavyweight for nearly 3 years in one of the more competitive eras in the history of the division. He beat Ali in that reign in one of the best pressure fighting performances ive seen in a boxing ring, he oozed class that night. I like the way people always like to bring up the 3 1/2 years out too and make it like Ali went straight in with Frazier without a camp, it was his third fight back. And all 3 Ali-Frazier fights were super competitive.

He has some other solid wins which have already been argued so not gonna go into it, but at the end of the day much of his legacy is built on his battles, win, and competitiveness with prob the greatest heavyweight ever. The other wins, the reign, the knockouts, gold medal, supplement a great career. You can take apart anyone's resume with biased slants and propaganda

So true, man. So true. No matter what a fighter has accomplished, it can be downplayed by the right azzh0le. Sad to see four votes against Joe but the 40 in favor of him as an ATG proves this place has a lot of sensible posters. It's hard to picture what more the man was supposed to do in his era to earn ATG status.
