The tournament is something I can get behind, it's the only way to force promoters into working together. No participation in the tournament = lose your ranking position. The fact is if Golovkin fights Canelo none of these guys is getting a shot at any of those belts for at least the next year or so, plenty of time for a tournament to make progress. Everyone makes money, people who don't want to fight each other now have to fight each other and you break apart the promoter monopolies.

I like this idea a lot too. The question is, will the power that be even bother with it? Don't see it for the foreseeable future.

Surely you don't get caught and suspended for drugs then straight back into mandatory challenger once the suspension is up. What sort of message is the wbc sending?

The WBC's position is that Canelo ate tainted meat, was exonerated by a hair test, and is going to be treated as if he was innocent.

The first time, yes. His excuse was accepted, he kept his position, and he was ordered to face Stiverne for the interim title. Then he failed another test and was given a lengthy ban.

I'm trying to get some clarity on whether Canelo actually remains Golovkin's mandatory after his ban and the cancellation on May 5th though. If that was the case surely they would be talking about stripping Golovkin if he chose not to fight Canelo - not talking about him being required to immediately fight Charlo. The implication would seem to be that Canelo is no longer mandatory. If this is the case the WBC should have made it's position clear immediately it de-mandated Canelo (presumably at the time of his ban).

WBC is willing to count a Canelo rematch as a mandatory. They can't force the fight because Canelo would never accept the percentage he would receive in a purse bid. So technically it would be Canelo dropping out by refusing to accept a purse bid, and thus Charlo would be mandatory.

The bold: The thing about this not happening has to do with sanctioning bodies. These guys don't wanna fight each other because each guy is strategically positioned under a different sanctioning body and is in fact a contender to a belt. Why waste a fight on a nobody when you can fight the champion straight?

One of the solutions is a tournament of all tier 1 middleweight contenders. With the current boxing politics, I don't see that one happening any time soon.

Yea, the problem is it can take a long time for mandatory challengers to actually get their shot. There's good fights that could be made, but for the reason you stated, these guys don't want them...a whole lot of posturing going on.

A tournament is a good idea if most of the top fighters can be convinced to participate. I'd love to see that. I'm interested in fights other than ggg vs Canelo or ggg vs whoever...the division has some talent that needs to be showcased.

Ummm. Yet the fight was previously ordered as a mandatory wasn't it? And I believe the WBC does in fact have discretionary right to modify mandatory purse splits as they see fit don't they? Their rules give them discretionary right to do pretty much anything.

Is canelo the #1 rated boxer? If he is then there shouldn’t be an issue but if I remember a fighter that is suspended can’t be ranked so they can’t say sh it larry ans you know it. It still all politics and about money nothing more.

If you're a boxing fan, the last thing we need is the dissolution of the titles. Realistically, the only ones clamoring for this are low IQ, known burger flipping imbecile-haters who have have continually hated on Golovin for last 3 years.

Shut the *** up and let boxing rules take effect. Golovkin waited for 3+ years to get a mandatory shot at WBC. Charlo can wait his turn after Derevyanchenko.

There is nothing wrong with it but the WBC isn't enforcing it as hard as they could. They say it's OK if he rematches Canelo first and then fights Jermall next. If he doesn't fight Canelo then he must fight Jermall or be stripped.It seems like they are using Jermall to try to push GGG into accepting Golden Boy's terms to rematch Canelo. They could demand GGG fight Jermall next instead of Canelo but they don't want that. If GGG fights either Canelo or Jermall he will still lose a belt for not fighting the Russian. No matter who GGG fights next he will lose a belt and maybe 2 belts. I think most boxing fans will continue to recognize GGG as the true champion until some middleweight beats him or he retires.

It was the WBC's turn to order a mandatory. They ordered Golovkin-Canelo rematch as a mandatory. As we know the fight didn't happen so they have every right to order another.

Golovkin chose not to complete his IBF mandatory last month when requested to do so. He chose an easier fight.

If he gets stripped it's his own damn fault for cherry picking.

Because the WBC ordered a mandatory rematch since the first fight ended in a controversial draw. Since it's the WBC's turn in the mandatory rotation, the Canelo rematch was going to count as the WBC mandatory. If the fight isn't going to happen, the WBC says it should still be their turn and interim champion Charlo should be next in the rotation. The WBC doesn't want to get skipped.

If they are in a position to challenge for a title why would they want to fight someone else and possibly lose that chance?

One of them should have had the shot instead of a fighter that hadn't fought in 2 years, from the division below and lost his last fight. Golovkin cherry picking caused the problem.
