Being interim champion is not an entity. Its only value is making you that organizations mandatory. So you can't describe the Rubio/Golovkin farce like it was some sort of unification because it wasn't. When Rubio went through with his fight against another alphabet organizations champion, he should stripped of his mandatory. A similar situation almost happened when Matthysse,then WBC mandatory champion decided to challenge Lamont Peterson then IBF champion. The only way Matthysse could keep his mandatory position was to agree to a 141lb contested non sanctioned bout. I'm no chess player,but uh check mate.

Golovkin became the WBC mando because he fought and beat Rubio, who was the WBC interim champ. Those are the WBC rules. They didn't make them up specially for GGG.

To say that fighting Andre Ward, in a years time, for 50% of an unknown and unspecified purse, was the best financial option open to GGG last year is just nuts.

Golovkin had been guaranteed a shot at the winner of Canelo vs Cotto next, if he beat Lemieux. He had also been promised a MW unification fight with Andy Lee after that, if Lee got past Saunders, which he was favourite to do.

They were all much better options, in terms of both risk and reward, than signing a contract with Ward for a fight a year down the line, at 168, which we now know would never have even have happened, because Ward can't make 168 any more.

The link that you posted spends all of two sentences, vaguely exploring the possibility of champions challenging other champions with in the same divisions. To go from there to a champion becoming another champion's mandatory is a gargantuan leap. The Cotto/Canelo vs Golovkin unification was insubstantial, the Ward fight was a legitimate concrete offer, should he have taken that fight and won. He would have returned with even greater leverage,but as the saying goes,oh well.

Ahhh. OK. I've tried to at least give some supporting evidence for my point of view, if you don't buy it that's cool. And yeah - can you actually envisage the scenario you outline in the second part of your post? Is that what you'd recommend to GGG if you were his promoter?

You know Garcia is just a belt holder and not a champion at 147. Beating Guerrero is something that a cab driver can do now.
