If I remember correctly Sugar Ray went 80-0 TWICE!

Floyd never beat an ATG fighter in his prime. So when one considers the feat of beating Charles...an ATG, it means a lot here. And Marciano never had a tremendous physical advantage over any of the men he fought, including Charles.
So I would put Floyd and Marciano as equal in there accomplishment. I don't subsribe to the heavyweight division being superior by default unless there were some incredibly strong punchers in the division, and in marciano's case all the strong punchers were past it.
What prime ATG did Marciano beat?
And no, they are absolutely no where near each other in accomplishment. Mayweather is a completely different level.Last edited by IronDanHamza; 09-14-2015, 03:35 PM.Comment

You unwittingly do Louis a great disservice...The man who fought marciano that night had the name, the past and would have the future of a fighter named Joe..but hardly the tools that made that fighter the magnificant punching machine people know as the Brown Bomber.Comment

Actually there are good points on both ends of the debate thats kind of whats been going on on this thread...but for the sake of both of us, why don't you get into an "because I said so" with another poster who debates that way. yeah Charles was not in his prime, I stand corrected on that.
There are many other reasons why their accomplishments are equal with respect to the 49 and 0 record, and floyd's are not greater. Floyd picked his competition through a good part of his career and he never had the advantage that Jones did when he managed to beat some Great fighters early in his career (Toney, Nunn and Hopkins among other Mccallum was already old when Jones fought him).
There is nothing in the overall quality of the opposition that distinguishes Floyd's wins from marciano's.Comment

Rocky Marciano competition was the WORST: Have any of you ever looked at the records of Marciano's opponents when he set the 49-Wins Record: Archie Moore 148W 19L 8D; Don ****ell 66W 11L 1D; Twice Ezzard Charles 85W 11L 1D; Twice Jersey Joe Walcott 51W 17L 2D....Why are you degrading Berto as a opponent?Comment

It's funny, but you hardly even hear Mayweather mention Marciano's record. It's the media, Marciano's family & forum posters talking about it more than most, similar to when Holmes threatened but failed to tie it.Comment

Actualy the subject is open to debate but but....oh never mind Dan says they were not equal, never mind! close the thread!

Mayweather beat better fighters. Clearly has a much better resume.
Mayweather's beaten way more top ranked fighters.
Mayweather's beaten way more World Champions.
Mayweather's won way more world titles, in 5 different divisions.
Mayweather is 26-0 in World title fights Marciano is 7-0 in world title fights.
How many good wins does Maricano even have? Like 3? 4?
They are not comparable.
And Roy Jones also never fought Micheal Nunn.Comment

I'm surprised someone who considers themselves a serious fan and historian even brings up these ****** points as if either of them are legitimate reasons to rank Floyd higher than rocky. Floyd fights in an era that has four champions, Rock fought in a time when there was one. How many champions do you expect him to be able to face when only one belt is being traded around? Some of the "champions" Floyd beat wouldn't even have a sniff at a belt if there was only one true title like back in the day. It's a watered down, useless, statistic. Why can't you fanatics talk about the great fighters he beat, isn't that a better indicator of how good a guy is? I don't hear anyone bring up these ****** statistics when talking about someone like Leonard. Instead they say he beat hagler, Duran, etc. Rock only fought in one division, suggesting Floyd is better because he fought in five is ridiculous.
You're a joke.
I wouldn't usually but it was brought up.
It doesn't need to go any further than the fact that Mayweather's resume is miles better than Marciano's.
Marciano has about 4 or 5 good wins, if that.Comment
