    Love rocky...

    But this ^

Fella started boxing at 21/22 and relied heavily on being the fitter man and bigger puncher. Marciano is a top 10 heavy just like Floyd is a top 10 lightweight and welter BUT Floyd's resume is simply greater than Rocky's...

it is very interesting as this is a very wide and complex topic to tackle...

the glorious "0" is subject to scrutiny as to the caliber of opposition, the time when the fights took place, the weights, the limitations, the manipulations...etc, etc...

however, there are boxers who have longer ko or winning streak over 50 but lost the "revered 0".....

so the question that pops up is "how many fights does a fighter needs to take to say he has done enough?"
i can see the thread is going the way as what i wrote above...

so many "what ifs"; on the weights, fighters conditions, timing of the fight, etc etc...

also noticed that the issue of weight difference, mostly people giving less weight (no pun intended) seemed to forget how the issue of cw; some as little as 1 or 2 lbs was the hot topic not very long ago...and yet, 30, 40 or 50 lbs were to some people something of no consequence...just something to be ignored...

but if, let's say julio cesar chavez stopped fighting at 87-0-0; he was 89-0-1 before his first official loss, will the 49-0 or 50-0 matter? will floyd stopping at his 50 to preserve his 0 means more than jcc's accomplishments?

we as boxing fans know 49-0 isn't a "record" it is Marciano's record as a fighter. Why ESPN is calling it such is ridiculous. why would anyone on NSB allow ESPN to define anything regarding boxing.

ESPN is just dumbing this down so casuals can relate. We all know Duran, JCC and dozens of other fighters eclipsed 49-0 at one point during their career.

          very well put, dunn...

the "glorious 50-0" is nothing but a smokes screen designed to hype one fighter over the others....

He fought Ezzard Charles at age 32, almost all of Floyd's big names were against guys over 35 years old. You are going to tell me near 40 year old Mosley, DLH, JMM, Pacquiao, etc were better than Ezzard Charles at 32?

:AYWOoD: Case and point! Dumb ass Floyd fan. Knows more than Hagler. when never stepped foot in a ring nor even seen a real fighter up close and personal.

                  • WW is and always has been a far more talent-packed division than HW. Dominating in the middle weight classes (135-160) is FAR more impressive than dominating the HWs. Give me a break.

Charles went 12-17 in his last 29 fights. Marciano fought him right in the middle of that 12-17 stretch, he was done at that point having taken too much punishment.

Yes, boxing and training is much different today than it was back then, guys can stay in their primes into their mid and late 30s. Better nutrition, better training methods, and better medical care have ensured that athletes can maintain their peak physically much much longer.

And sure, several fighters have gone 45-0 or better, but look at who they fought, JC Chavez fought almost no one his 1st 85 fights and then when he actually started fighting elite fighters he started taking some losses, that's the way it happens over and over. Mayweather started fighting elite guys in his 18th pro fight and he hasn't lost yet after his 48th fight. That is what is remarkable, because boxing often is about styles, most fighters run up against a style they can't deal with and lose, Mayweather hasn't.
