Andre Ward: UK fans better because they have less options.

At the end of the day, capturing the imagination of the public depends on if you can do it or not and not on the attitude of the public, if you see my point. If you manage to build a fanbase then it shouldn't really matter what else is available to fans. If you gain fans then you gain fans, if you don't then you don't. Basically, if you capture hearts, then other options wont really matter.
But I see his point about the UK. UK fans are known for getting behind fighters, that is a pretty well known thing in terms of this sports fan bases. I know some people may disagree but the scaling differences between the US and UK play a big part in my opinion...The US is VAST in comparison, so just that alone can make it difficult to 'spread out'. If you had a fighter with some hype behind him in the UK and you wanted to build up his name, within about 8-10 fights you could cover most-if not all-the biggest cities here. That and the fact that the UK has a pretty healthy boxing scene in general makes it easier to get behind the built up guys.
EDIT: That last part is not trying to say the US does not have a healthy scene...Just saying the UK does and its smaller scale seems to be able to rally fans effectively.Last edited by SthPaw; 04-26-2015, 03:45 PM.Comment

can you imagine the best indian athletes going up against our boys?
they'd be several inches short, several pounds light, and several steps slower. lebron james is 6'9" tall, 270 lbs, and moves like a welterweight. men of that size are common in the NBA. hell, they're common in college basketball.
it's becoming apparent to me that brits will never understand this.
americans are the most athletic people on the planet. our athletes are most successful. it's logical to assume that they are the most talented. any objective criteria supports that.Comment

Ward is 100% correct.
We have the largest youth sports program in the entire world, we build MILLION dollar stadiums to watch HIGH SCHOOL football games, sports are god in America, no country compares.
Collegiate sports as well are huge, really there is no comparison.Comment

I disagree. America mostly excel at sports that are only really played in America. Maybe Americans excel in Basketball and that's a worldwide sport i guess, but what else?
American Football and Baseball are basically not played in other places, apart from i think Baseball might be popular in Korea and a couple of other places but its just as a form of entertainment but sport isn't really a big thing there as a career path. My girlfriend is Korean and their outlook on sport as a chosen career is very different.
Americans once dominated Athletics, or sprinting anyway, which is a worldwide sport but now Jamaica dominate sprinting and long distance is usually dominated by African nations. Soccer is played worldwide but is usually dominated by European and South American nations. Boxing is a worldwide sport which is represented in the fact there is champions from all over the world.
So in what worldwide sports does America excel? I can't think of any except Basketball.Comment
