running shouldn't be an issue if the other fighter can cut the ring off. the tricky part about it is that runners will also hug the **** out of the opponent if he gets close. the ref has to reset them and thus rinse and repeat. most fighters won't look good period if the other guy's entire strategy is to spoil the fight. you don't usually spar for that kind of bull****.
Should points be taken away for running?

Absolutely
They should take away points if the fighters hit each other too hard. Like "come on man you know that hook was too vicious. That's not cool"
They should be required to wear sensors to prevent this. I also think they should outlaw counter punching. tf is that bullshit??? They should just be throwing at the same time and whoever can't take it and is a pussy loses. All rings should be 3 feet as well to prevent any movement.

Agreed. People don't feel satisfied with that BS after they put their money down for it.Hell yes they should, especially if it is a PPV fight. People pay big money to see fireworks in PPV fights and the fighters should be expected to give the fans their money's worth. If they run for too many rounds, they should be kicked out of the PPV club and never be invited back again.Comment

Boxing is not going to put in "NEW RULES" and dumb down the sport to get the approval of ****** FANS!
So this will NEVER HAPPEN! The fighters are in a RING where exactly are they running to...that is not running that is taking advantage of a fighter with **** footwork, no job and neither the skills or IQ to "CUT THE RING OFF"
Don't ask for boxing to adjust the rules for the fighters you like...how about putting pressure on the fighters to GET BETTER! Step in to the ring and go toe to toe the comeback and talk about how guys run and need to go toe to toe more...easy request when you're not the one getting hitLast edited by sicko; 02-08-2015, 12:09 AM.Comment

It just seems unfair to, for example, penalize a runner in the early rounds only to have his gameplan to become clear in the middle of the fight. He takes control for the rest of the fight, using movement, and finds himself penalized for the same movement that ultimately helped him to win the fight.Excellent questions!
Arm weary or not, he should have conserved his energy. Yes, he should be penalized and by that, I mean running, not using lateral movement. I define it by moving around the ring without throwing any punches. We have all seen it.
In that moment, he probably is not running, but instead backing up or holding. Guys don't run that much when they are hurt. They do it to avoid the other fighter so they won't get hurt.
They do to a point, but if they were penalized, it would set a precedent that either makes them stop doing it or find a new career. After all, isn't this a man's sport?
I also want to clarify that a boxer can be plenty defensive without running or even a lot of lateral movement. Roberto Duran and Julio Cesar Chavez, Sr. both could stand in front of an opponent and make them miss. They will never be called runners and always respected as being more manly than their boxing counterparts- Leonard and Whitaker.
I can imagine a proponent of the half scoring system saying that we could give judges discretion for taking a little extra off for extreme running, or extreme clinching that they feel the ref is duly not enforcing. That might make ppl uneasy too though
Just imagine if SMoger was given this power anytime there was more than 1 foot of distance between the fighters someone would be getting docked a point for running. Might as well tie one arm together or something.
Leonard and Whitaker were not examples of bad movement, negative movement I'd be talking about - most of the time thats good movement to me. As much as I wanted Whitaker to lose, I can go back and realize how difficult it must have been to make Sr. look how he did in spots. It's should be just as respected as their counterparts. I prefer a Chavez Sr to Whitaker, but I'm not averse to the argument that what Leonard and Whitaker do is harder to pull off.Last edited by LA_2_Vegas; 02-08-2015, 12:12 AM.Comment

Well, running is not a strategy. It's cowardice. If a guy can't make another guy miss who is right in front of him, maybe he just lacks skills. Look at James Toney for example. When did he run or even use a lot of movement to avoid punches? It just seems unfair to, for example, penalize a runner in the early rounds only to have his gameplan to become clear in the middle of the fight. It's funny how you stick up for the "fighters" with such a low skill level they resort to running and expending loads of useless energy to avoid punches but they shouldn't be punished.Boxing is not going to put in "NEW RULES" and dumb down the sport to get the approval of ****** FANS!

Instead, let's force their opponents who came to fight to chase them down or learn to cut off the ring and waste their energy since their opponent lacks the sense to know how to defend with a fighter within a mile of them.
And no. I'm a fan- not a fighter. That doesn't hold water. This is a forum for fans. And as a fan, I'm fed up with the running. What ever happened to the customer always being right?Comment

No, but I think people need to redefine their definition of effective aggression, Lara could have done that 30 rounds against Canelo, and nothing would have gotten done, there was nothing effective about he was doing. Did Canelo look good? Not at all, but Lara seemed to think that was all that mattered, not how he looked instead.
People really have forgotten the origins of boxing around here, or ignore it to be boxing hipsters, it used to be that the aggressor was the given the close round every single time, for making the fight. Now it seems like it's about how pretty a fighter looks, not about how much work he is actually getting done.Comment

But yet you want to put Rules in place? How can you call for things to be put in place in a sport you never participated in? It is not a chase when you know how to cut the ring off, it is only chase for the guys who don't have a clue how to cut the ring off. It's funny how you stick up for the "fighters" with such a low skill level they resort to running and expending loads of useless energy to avoid punches but they shouldn't be punished.

Bottom Line is that I wouldn't try to tell any fighter how to fight because that is NOT what boxing is about: GUYS WITH DIFFERENT STYLES TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO BEAT EACH OTHER! That is what boxing is and always has been! They're not suppose to all fight the same! They're not suppose to just stand flat footed and swing away until someone goes down.Last edited by sicko; 02-08-2015, 12:26 AM.Comment
