Comments Thread For: Chavez Jr: I Never Turned Down Fights, Just Extensions

I am glad that Chavez Jr. is sticking to his guns. Bob Arum has been raping and ripping off fighters for years with this kind of BS. With the contract situation, I would bet that the contract expires after Jr.'s next fight, but Arum has until 2015 to provide him that last fight and that is why Arum is so hell bent on getting him to sign an extension.
Arum supposedly pays Pacquaio $20 million per fight . I don't believe that, but that is what Arum claims. Imagine how much money Pac could have made if he had done the same thing Mayweather did and gone independent. He could have made $50 to $60 million per fight without having to give Arum a cut. Chavez Jr. can make a lot more money without signing a binding contract with Arum, just as Mayweather and Cotto did.Comment

Chavez Jr. could have been managed great by any promoter. He could make more than $17 million for two fights by not signing with Arum. Do you think that Arum is offering Jr. $17 million for two fights while Arum only takes home $3 million for those two fights? Hell No! If he is offering Jr. $17 million for two fights, that means that Arum himself would make $30 million off those two fights.Comment

Well, it is, in the end, up to Jr, he owes TR a fight, and those are the terms. He either gets a fight for less (and the estimated $3.5 mil he woulda got for Golovkin with no extension would exceed his best purse to date) or takes a massive payrise to stay with them.I still don't understand why people want to side with Arum when a fighter decides he doesn't want to sign any contract extension. Nobody knows for sure how much more money could Chavez Jr make with other promoter or as a free agent. And at worst case scenario even if Chavez would care about the advise of many posters that hate him, it is good to remember that dignity and liberty don't have a price.
No one is forcing him to do anything, it's just that when a guy who's career best payday is $3 mil, it's hard to feel sympathy when he turns down a $12 - 17 mil deal over two fights. Specially since his performances both in his marquee fight against Maravilla and since have been so entirely uninspiring.
Sure, if he wants his dignity and liberty he can fight a meaningless B level opponent for a reduced payday - or he could actually take on a genuinely challenging opponent for a career best payday then leave Arum (though technically he might be unable to fight for anyone else til late next year anyway). I'd respect him for that.
Problem is, Jr signed to fight at least one more fight for TR - he can't just walk away now - unless, if he really is desperate to leave, he tries to buy his contract out.
The options have been presented to him. Arum, naturally wants to hang on to his money fighter and has given him a very powerful financial incentive to stay, but also given him an option which matches or exceeds his previous best payday as an alternative.
I dislike Arum as much as I do most promoters, but I can't really see how Jr's being persecuted in this scenario. Furthermore, whoever he signs with next will also, effectively, have the same power over him (potentially more so if it's a Haymon contract). That's just how this s#it works.Last edited by Citizen Koba; 09-07-2014, 03:18 PM.Comment

Chavez Jr. could have gotten $7 million or more for fighting Golovkin from any promoter without signing a contract extension. Bob Arum offered Floyd Mayweather $8 million to fight Margarito as long as Mayweather signed a three-fight deal with Arum. Mayweather declined and fought Carlos Baldomir for $8 million under Goosen-Tutor Promotions. He then fought Oscar De La Hoya for $10 million guarantee plus a percentage of the PPV that resulted him making more than $20 million. He then fought Ricky Hatton for a $10 million guarantee plus PPV money that resulted in another $20 million payday. He would have never gotten the ODLH fight fighting for Arum and wouldn't have been paid $10 million to fight Hatton under Arum. Cotto would have have gotten the fight with Mayweather or the record payday of $8 million plus PPV percentage if he had stayed with Arum.
The best thing Chavez Jr. can do is to finish his contract with Arum and leave. He can make more on his own than he ever would under Arum.Comment

He can make more than what he is being offered if he becomes a free agent, he has the name, the fans, and the Latino appeal. This is why Arum would never offer him a fight without an extension. Oscar made more money after leaving Arum, Mayweather made more money after leaving Arum, Cotto made more money after becoming a free agent...Chavez Jr. could have been managed great by any promoter. I'm willing to bet he doesnt make 17m for his first 2 post Top Rank fights, not even close. Cotto has never made that much for back to back fights, not even close. Didnt Cotto make dirt for Trout?Chavez Jr. could have been managed great by any promoter. He could make more than $17 million for two fights by not signing with Arum. Of course the promoter will get his, thats the nature of the business. A couple of guys were able to go solo, but they had 10x the talent and credentials.Comment
