Comments Thread For: Chavez Jr: I Never Turned Down Fights, Just Extensions

Former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-1-1, 32KOs) is ready to fight but claims his current promoter, Top Rank, have not offered him a fight without the inclusion of a clause that extends their promotional agreement.

Chavez has one fight remaining with Top Rank, before he becomes a full free agent. According to Top Rank, Chavez has until the end of 2015 to step in the ring for the one fight remaining in their promotional deal.

Chavez Jr turned down a career high $7mil payday to face golovkin. Bob asked for a 2yr contract extension. Pretty good deal if u ask me. Where else is Jr going to make $7mil for 1 fight?

I started to give Chavez Jr. benefit of the doubt. He signs the extension for "one more fight" then all of the sudden in that fight it states in the contract he needs to fight one more.... we know these promoters are scumbags, but I do agree Chavez Jr. passed up on a hell of a deal.

The problem is that Top Rank has less fighters than Golden Boy. So when one fighters leaves Top Rank. The stable gets smaller and smaller. It's fkin small enough as it is.

You can blame Bob Arum, or you can blame Oscar De La Hoya for not working together. But the reality is, they are both at fault. Because if you were the owner of Top Rank you wouldn't want your stable to get smaller either. Bob just doing what he can to keep a relevant stable of fighters.

Mayweather made it worse by using one of his MANY EXCUSES to not fight Pacquiao, that a reason is because he is with Bob Arum.

Once Mayweather is gone from the sport for good. Things WILL get better. BELIEVE THAT!

According to Chavez's manager, Bob asked for a one fight extension with the $7mil guarantee, not two years.

"The offer was a $6.6 million guarantee for Julio to fight Golovkin, which included two extensions. Although we considered that offer a below-market offer for a pay-per-view fight of this stature, Julio, nonetheless, immediately responded to all of the fight terms. It was a fight that he wanted, it was a fight that the people wanted, and he wanted to give them that," said Keane.

"What he did not agree to was a two-fight extension. But Everything else, he agreed to. There were multiple other offers by Top Rank that always included extensions. The last one is correct. Bob did offer him a $7 million guarantee with a one-fight extension, and $10 million if he won, $5 million if he lost. Again, we accepted the fight, but not the extensions."

Keane said that Arum "then came back to us with a standalone fight with no extensions for a $2 million guaranteed purse," and that Top Rank would not budge on its final one-fight offer.
