no he wouldn't......because cotto had the much quicker hands and the better timing. he was getting to the punch much quicker then martinez was (that also had nothing to do with legs) thats just timing. also cotto doesn't have crappy defense. if you think cotto has crappy defense martinez has 0 defense in that case.........cottos problem has always been stamina. running out of steam. he's fixed it a tad bit moving up.........thats his weakness. his defense is decent.
martinez: "it was a punch and not the knee"

I bet the ring is just waiting to place Cotto based on your highly regarded opinion.I've always thought Cotto is a very nice boxer but a little overrated by his fans as proven by this post.
Hard to really say if he's P4P Top 10. He is more skilled than a few guys on the consensus P4P lists but I don't rate his last two wins so I find it hard to place him.Comment

Mate....Mayorga, Trout, one eyed slow as **** Margarito and the one legged Rabbi were able to land on Cotto but a healthy fast Sergio Martinez wouldn't? Get a fkin grip!no he wouldn't......because cotto had the much quicker hands and the better timing. he was getting to the punch much quicker then martinez was (that also had nothing to do with legs) thats just timing. also cotto doesn't have crappy defense. if you think cotto has crappy defense martinez has 0 defense in that case.........cottos problem has always been stamina. running out of steam. he's fixed it a tad bit moving up.........thats his weakness. his defense is decent.Comment

If you cant see that the Martinez that was dancing around and throwing combos at Pavlik and Chavez wasnt even remotely close to the one that fought Cotto then nobody can help you.How about the fact that Cotto is 18374629 times the boxer that Jr is? Have you seen that fight recently? Jr. just walked Sergio down with no defense at all. It was cake work for Sergio. Jr. got a gift against Vera, BRANDON VERA.
I don't doubt that Sergio was a better fighter back when he beat Pavlik and Williams, but stylistically they bring completely different things to the table that Cotto does.
I don't know why it is so hard for people to see that Cotto caught Sergio with a perfect hook behind the ear that would have landed and hurt any version of Martinez. That's what made his legs go. If the fight were to have ended in the first then maybe I'd be more on the side that it was Sergio's legs being shot.
Then 3-5 Sergio moved around the ring just fine. Cotto just cut off the ring, like he has always done.
Watch the Pavlik fight. Martinez fell down several times in that fight, and was even knocked down because of balance issues. It was his knees though...
Yes I agree that Cotto is far more skilled than Chavez and Pavlik. It doesnt change the fact that hes a small 154er and an even smaller 160er.
It also doesnt change the fact he got completely outboxed by featherfists Austin Trout. And theres no way in hell you can tell me Austin Trout is a better fighter than a healthy Sergio Martinez.
Inb4 Freddie Roach brought back the 140 Cotto lol
This is clearly a case of Cotto fans overrating a win because they suck Cottos **** too much.
Cottos best wins at 154 are bum legged Foreman, 1 eyed MArgarito, and Ricardo Mayorga.
Sorry his ONLY wins.Last edited by bopbopbbe; 06-08-2014, 03:15 PM.Comment

"if martinez threw combinations he would have busted him up"
no.......cotto obviously had more then enough to knock sergio flat out (as shown in the first round) sergio couldn't throw combos at cotto because of what cotto was throwing back at him (it made him reluctant)
the timing & speed was just off the chart with cotto.............martinez would never be able to get off in that kind of way against cotto.
people just don't get...........Comment

Cotto is not a counter-puncher, he can't fight going backwards. Martinez would land one straight left and then completely back off without following up because he couldn't throw more than one shot at a time. And even that one shot had nothing on it because he couldn't get any leverage."if martinez threw combinations he would have busted him up"

Mayorga got out boxed and knocked out (i don't see what you're saying for that fight) trout landed because trout is a good boxer. & margarito had his moments but was dominated in that fight.
macklin timed martinez over and over again & he's actually a lot worse then myorga or trout. you've went into space somewhere. lets bring the argument back to cotto vs martinez.Comment

You are wasting your time arguing with this idiot. He is known Cotto hater and has no real argument other just his dumb biased opinion."if martinez threw combinations he would have busted him up"

dude, what are you talking about? sergio has always made excuses (or told the truth) when his body took a injury in A match (ALWAYS) after the murray fight he went on and on about how he felt like he broke his hand.............I am gonna do a lot of breaking down in this thread because you guys have taken this way too far.
There is no point reviewing anything. You want the clock to start ticking when the Cotto knockdowns started to assess how good and fit Martinez was. Regardless whether it was his 'knee' or not or combination of injuries. It is absolutely clear in this fight there was no Martinez from the get go. This was an absolute shocking fight to watch. Throughout the whole fight, even prior to Martinez getting knocked down it was clear how old he was getting and showed even little head movement and his legs were pretty static etc. Go analyse his previous fights as well and come back to this fight and see how abysmal Martinez was. He's not even a shell of his former self, he was worse than that.
I'll tell you why Martinez says it wasn't his leg that went wrong during the knockdowns for two reasons. One: Because he's looking to fight again. Two: his legs were already bad prior to the fight. Anyone with a brain can see it.
I hope he bloody retires before he becomes a mini post Roy Jones.Comment
