this is called saving face. martinez wants another big payday. he will prob take the golovking fight now and be completely destroyed.
martinez: "it was a punch and not the knee"

They were all able to land frequently on Cotto and most of them were slow as ****. A fast, sharp, prime Martinez lands on Cotto at willMayorga got out boxed and knocked out (i don't see what you're saying for that fight) trout landed because trout is a good boxer. & margarito had his moments but was dominated in that fight.
macklin timed martinez over and over again & he's actually a lot worse then myorga or trout. you've went into space somewhere. lets bring the argument back to cotto vs martinez.Comment

he wasn't trying to counter punch martinez (that wasn't even the game plan) I'm sure that freddie looked at a lot of what happened in the first willams fight and margarito fight and wanted to apply more of a come forward educated pressure kind of thing (and it worked in the very first round) after that cotto begin to outbox brawl and switch between the 2 when ever he wanted. the reason why martinez couldn't get off is because he was the slower fighter. he had been hurt and almost knocked out already & he was being timed........it made him a lot more tentative. he didn't wanna throw out a bunch of combos and then get timed with a hook or a body shot. cotto had him thinking........Cotto is not a counter-puncher, he can't fight going backwards. Martinez would land one straight left and then completely back off without following up because he couldn't throw more than one shot at a time. And even that one shot had nothing on it because he couldn't get any leverage.Last edited by Godsfly; 06-08-2014, 03:34 PM.Comment

I used the Trout example too when I picked Martinez to win. Truth is Trout is a lot more defensively responsible than Martinez. He also threw a lot more body punches and had more variety to his attack. He is a weaker puncher, but at least he kept his hands moving and made it hard for Cotto to set his feet.If you cant see that the Martinez that was dancing around and throwing combos at Pavlik and Chavez wasnt even remotely close to the one that fought Cotto then nobody can help you.
Yes I agree that Cotto is far more skilled than Chavez and Pavlik. It doesnt change the fact that hes a small 154er and an even smaller 160er.
It also doesnt change the fact he got completely outboxed by featherfists Austin Trout. And theres no way in hell you can tell me Austin Trout is a better fighter than a healthy Sergio Martinez.
Inb4 Freddie Roach brought back the 140 Cotto lol
This is clearly a case of Cotto fans overrating a win because they suck Cottos **** too much.
Cottos best wins at 154 are bum legged Foreman, 1 eyed MArgarito, and Ricardo Mayorga.
Sorry his ONLY wins.
I have always thought Martinez was overrated so maybe that's why this isn't such a shock to me. GG would have destroyed Martinez last night and four years ago. Jermain Taylor would have busted him up. I just underestimated what Cotto had left.
Look I said that Sergio is not the same man who was in the ring with Pavlik, but if you watch that fight he falls all over the place several times in that fight too because of Pavlik cutting off the ring. I was using that as an example.
For all we know Sergio has not slipped much since the Jr. fight. Jr. is just a slow fighter with little skill. Macklin, Barker, Dzindruk..all of those guys are bigger and slower.
Remember when Roach said Cotto was a better puncher than Jr.? Maybe he was right?Comment

Cotto is not quicker than a prime Martinez....are you fkin kidding me?Comment

Cotto is a better puncher p4p but NOT at 160 and up its not even a debate. Jr is a god damn cruiser weight, i dont care how good of a puncher Cotto was at 140 and 147, hes not a bigger puncher than Jr.I used the Trout example too when I picked Martinez to win. Truth is Trout is a lot more defensively responsible than Martinez. He also threw a lot more body punches and had more variety to his attack. He is a weaker puncher, but at least he kept his hands moving and made it hard for Cotto to set his feet.

How can you say Sergio hasnt slipped that much since the Jr fight when he lost and got a gift decision against Murrary...14 MONTHS AGO BEFORE AND THE KNEE SURGERIES.
Look I like Cotto and all and i think he was a great fighter at 140 and 147.
But he clearly has NOT been great at 154 and it simply makes no sense to say hes suddently a great 160 fighter because he made a crippled Sergio Martinez not come out for the 11th.
This is about context and people just dont seem to understand that it's really baffling.Comment

quicker as in quicker to the punch. martinez has raw speed. cotto gets you with timing..........overall, cotto being able to time him over and over again made martinez look slow.Comment

Didn't Foreman last 2 rounds when he damaged his leg? and hes was like babi on ice. Martinez, although not right, would not have been able to continue the way he did for that long, if he suffered torn ligamentsComment

What's your top 10 P4P list? I can see Cotto at 7-10 realisitically. Sergio was a consensus top 10 guy and he beat him clearly.I've always thought Cotto is a very nice boxer but a little overrated by his fans as proven by this post.
Hard to really say if he's P4P Top 10. He is more skilled than a few guys on the consensus P4P lists but I don't rate his last two wins so I find it hard to place him.
Who should Cotto fight next in your opinion? I want to know what someone who isn't a massive Cotto fan thinks on both of these topics.Comment
