Back when Martinez (2010) held titles at 154 and 160 simultaneously, a fight between Martinez and Mayweather made sense. In 2007, Martinez also won a final eliminator that made him the mandatory to fight for the 154 WBC title Mayweather and DLH were dis*****g, but after fighting DLH Mayweather left the title vacant, and moved back down to 147 to fight Hatton instead (and then 'retired'). So probably around late-2007--early 2011, a Martinez v. Mayweather fight at 154 could have made sense.
I think that by 2012, despite Mayweather moving back up to 154 (for Cotto) it would have been much more difficult for Sergio to move back down to 154 since he hadn't campaigned at 154 in a while--the fight also wouldn't have made as much sense since people no longer associated Sergio w/the 154 pound division so it would have been looked at as Mayweather draining Sergio down by 6 pounds.
The Golovkin argument I don't understand, GGG (a career middleweight) has never fought at 154 before--not even in the at the amateurs. Golovkin would be a walking corpse if he fought Mayweather at 154 (that is ofcourse if he doesn't show up in a wheelchair) and Mayweather would get rightfully criticized if he did fight him at 154.
