I voted for Calzaghe. If Froch ever beats Ward I might give Froch the edge but not now. Sure, Froch is ten times more exciting but Calzaghe never lost and he beat Kessler by a wide ud. The same Kessler that won a close fight over Froch. Calzaghe went to 175 and beat Hopkins years ago when Hopkins was better than he is now. Froch won't go to 175 to fight Hopkins now, years after Calzaghe went to 175 and beat Hopkins. I think a prime Calzaghe would beat a prime Froch with speed and a better defense.
Who has the Better Resume Froch or Calzaghe?

Where is that quote from?"I'm not chasing after Roy Jones. Be honest, Roy Jones is a good fighter and I don't want tough fights, I just want big money."

And how is that?
He hadn't won a legit fight in years and wasn't in the Top 10 at 168.
He took the fight on what? 2 weeks notice? I can't even remember it could well have been less.Comment

It's funny to me when you start hearing;
"He beat, err..Richie Woodhall! (coming off a loss) That's a good win"
"Errr, who else, err, Charles Brewer! (Coming off a 3 round up and down war with Atwon Echols) that's a good win"
"Errr, Omar Shieka!"
Whenever I see these kind of threads it get's to a point where I see guy's like this being reeled off when in actual reality the wins are at the very best decent and nothing more.
Another fight he gets way too much credit for is 'the Mike Tyson clone' in Jeff Lacy
It was the best performance of Joes career but the way they hyped Jeff Lacy up and people go on as if its a great win amuses me greatly.
I want to say his win over B-Hop is great and I want to say his win over Reid is underrated but I had him losing both those fights!
You know a guys resume is lacking majorly when Peter Manfredo is bought up as one of your best wins.
He didn't retire to avoid Froch either, he retired to avoid D-Mac! Who has the undefeated English light heavyweight champion having DESTROYED Steve Spartacus!Comment

"But Calzaghe, who possesses frightening self-belief, would not turn down a challenge to Jones or anybody else."

two things need calrifying in this post:
1) when we say resume are we also factoring in the fact that froch lost some fights? beuase alot of posters don't really seem to look at the lossess and just highlight the wins.
2) I would say froch has faced 2 fighters who are HOF worthy and lost twice and won once. Calzaghe faced 3 and beat all 3 - right there case closed.
3) froch faced alot of fighters when they still had some sort of stock (ie. were still unbeaten) e.g. pascal, AA, dirrell and bute. I think hindsight shows us that these guys were/are solid fighters who might win a belt every now and again but they weren't much better than reid, sheika (had just beat g johnson when he faced zaghe), b mitchell (recently been robbed against ottke).Comment

He was clearly still a tough out. It had been a couple years, but the second Collins fight was tough and close and he still had the two Thompson wars in him after that. Eubank took it on short notice, but he was scheduled to fight on the undercard and already in camp so it wasn't like he was coming off his couch. That was a huge step up in quality for Calzaghe at that point.Last edited by crold1; 05-26-2013, 12:16 PM.Comment

Kessler being Hall of Fame is highly debatable and I'd say it's a longer shot than you think. And Joe should never, ever, get credit for beating Jones as 'beating a Hall of Famer.' That's like giving Holmes credit for Ali. It's literally true, but the context is important. I'm not even sure Ward is HOF yet either. I'd say its likely, and he is WELL on track, but if he ran into a Lloyd Honeyghan type (a la Curry) or a Toney (a la Michael Nunn who was about as highly regarded as Ward to a wider audience), the HOF could vanish.Comment
