how many fighters are like floyd & jmm. too few, isn't it? so, if we based that analogy that floyd & jmm would give pac problems then pac is not really a smart fighter.

he's smart because he took advantage of his athleticism and explosiveness to become an exciting fighter that made him a ppv star and brought him millions.

if he chose to be a defensive cautious fighter, i don't think he'll be as big as he is today because he doesn't have that arrogant trash-talking personality to market himself and catch people's attention.

What is the use being smart when Pac gives you the worst beating in your career. Barrera, Cotto, Mosley, etc. all tried to box Pac and played smart but guess what? You are a fool if you think boxing your opponents is the only way to win a fight and if you didnt box them you are a dumb. Pac will box and beat the crap of you if he needs to like what he did to Oscar and Margarito but the rest of his opponents he doesn't need that. He will just take your soul out of you.

I think pacquiao is a smart fighter, but not of genius level of course. He just fight the style his heart and mentality wants, and sometimes has to pay for it. His specialties are his physical talent, heart, hunger for greatness and determination. He loves to be reckless and take risk inside the square because he knows his chin can take it if something goes wrong (not until the marquez IV). His downfall will is also be his aggressive mentality, he cannot systematically cut the ring off against good movers because he's so impatient to do his thing if he's not being effective. Feints of marquez were so effective against him because he's so impatient. And he always want to impress the fans.

Since pacquiao, for me, already loss 1 or 2 of the specialties I've mentioned above (esp. hunger for greatness), he no longer excel in such areas we expect him to. The marquez IV was just another day in the office for him. While marquez trained for 4months and even wrote a book about it. Who wants it more wins it for me.

Again Marquez will always be pac's daddy. Pac's mentality and style are made for him. What makes it close is pacquiao's spectacular physical talent. He only pushes his speed and workrate, and sometimes gets lucky to land. Because that's what pacquiao does, more often than not, he overcomes smartness with his physical abilities, also against lesser opponents.

to those who answered average, or pac is ******. I dont know who is smart for you? Abril? put them in the same ring.

One thing that I knock him is his inability to cut the ring off. He just doesn't know how to cut the ring off, he just follows you.
a lot of good boxers don't know how to cut off the ring for some reason.

              especially boxer punchers with power.

the limited skill pressure fighters are usually the ones who are good at it.

i guess the more skilled guys just don't work on it as much.

I think he was/is a offensive wizard and a defensive lame. So it balances out to average. He isn't a thinking man's boxer. He's great at what he does and that's all anyone can ask of an athlete
