What we have here is a classic case of thread backfire!

While Vitali might not be an ATG based on all weight classes, he's certainly an all time great heavyweight in many people's eyes (see Tunney's thread).

And H2H, prime Vitali beats just about any fighter in the history of the sport (without injuries and premature stoppages made by doctors when you're winning your fight clearly).

        Thank you for the attention.

        End of thread.

How do you judge all time greatness? Accomplishment and resume is the standard true boxing historians use. If you think Vits is an all time great you must include fighters like Ruiz and Nielsen as well. Ruiz has a better resume and Nielsen is comparable. Are they all time greats?

Came back from a 3+ year retirement due to injury to make the defending WBC champ (who many "experts" in online boxing forums picked to win) quit on his stool in order to regain his title.

            Hasn't lost since.

That stat right there is ATG material. Positively M. Jordan-like.

Vitali may not be an ATG in the eyes of some butthurt xenophobic Americans and a few stray Lewis-lovers, but who cares about them?

In the places where boxing is still growing in popularity and is a relevant sport, there is no question that Vitali is an ATG.

He came back to beat another contender who had already lost to his brother, was crude, and who's best win was over a fat former middleweight. Yeah, your argument makes a lot of sense!

How are you to decide what to use as standard, who do you think you are? Your opinion holds no higher value than mine. And no, Ruiz and Nielsen are obviously not ATG's. They haven't been dominant champions like Vitali, and they are not on the same level.

Vitali has beaten plenty of good fighters in his career, from Herbie Hide, to Corrie Sanders, Sam Peter, Gomez, Adamek, etc. His resume is pretty good, considering his long layoff.

Temper, temper. Who said I decided what standard to use? I clearly said "Accomplishment and resume is the standard true boxing historians use." But if you want to try and argue his resume with me than be my guest. Sanders had never beaten a top 10 fighter before or after Wlad. Sam Peters best win was over a former middlweight and had alread been beaten by little brother. Gomez beat one good fighter. And former lightheavyweight Adamek had 5 fights at heavy beating one top 10 fighter who never beat another top 10 fighter before or since. Lets look at Ruiz' best wins, shall we?

Rahman - Had won and lost to Lewis, gave up a TD to Holyfield and drew with David Tua. All weren top 10 fighters at the time.

Golota - Had previously gotten a draw against IBF champion Chris Byrd.

Holyfield - ATG who was ranked only behind Lewis when he should have lost the drae, but fought a much closer fight in the loss in his two previous fights.

Johnson - Was undefeated and had stopped world rated Oleg Maskeav two fights before.

So really now....going by YOUR standards John Ruiz is an ATG.

Now you can end the thread.

Head to head Vitaly is one of the best heavyweights in history. Im not sure he's an all time great though because his opponents were pretty weak overall. Wlad on the other hand is a top 10 all time great.
