Can someone explain to me why Pongjngkam is even considered for P4P or HOF status when his resume is padded:
With boxers who have more loses then wins
With boxers making their debut
With boxers who have had less then 10 fights total
When he very rarely (if ever) fought boxers that weren't Asian?
All this is just from a quick google search, if anyone else has any information, please post
Is his record padded as hell? Yes, but most of those in between fights were never intended as anything more than checks. Dude wasn't making big dollars and fights in a limited market. Was he a capital "G" great fighter? Probably not. But one or two stiff ones a year is par for the course in the modern era for everyone. He just stayed active in between.
This upset is surprising but not shocking. After Kameda I thought about one of the career pieces I do but held off for the loss at the back end. Little guys have losses like this sometimes towards their end to guys who couldn't lace their shoes in their prime. Chandler was MUCH more highly regarded when he lost to Muniz. Mark Johnson lost to Ivan Hernandez who, while undefeated then, proved to be not very good at all afterwards.
At 34 (almost 35), Wonjongkam was ancient for a Flyweight. This was inevitable. That he managed such a strong late run was commendable.
Could have been much more (or less....look at who else wore Fly belts in the last 11 years that he didn't fight and consider how many he would have been favored against in a very talented era) but was a hell of a fighter for a LONG time.Last edited by crold1; 03-02-2012, 08:13 PM.Comment

Remember the days when threads on Wonjongkam only had like 6 replies with me, you, Jro and a handful of others?
Those were the day's.
Now, since he's lost (We called this how long ago?) we get 9 pages of replies about how Wongjongkam's a bum and was never goodI find it funny, honesty.
I can see the same thing happening with Moreno. I really do. Just check the last Moreno thread, how many replies? 3? 4? Something like that.
We actually have guys here implying Wonjongkam wasn't on the decline.Comment

Wongkongjam is protected fighting in Thailand, but beat some decent opposition. I'm not sure if he's a hall of famer, he's borderline imo. but he's had a good career.Comment

He stands up to Edgar Sosa and Kameda's best as well as Naito, then loses to a guy I think Segura blew out in 1.
They imply Sonny Boy is a puncher. Somewhat but he's not a one shot good night type of guy.Comment

I think he will eventually but not likely I'd vote him 1st ballot or anything. Look at some of the Asian fighters who can't get past the ethnocentric IBHOF voting pool. He's not as good as Ohba (a travesty of exclusion), was more consistent but against lesser opp than Kingpetch, and not quite as good as Yuh or Gushiken IMO. His recent currency could help, but we'll see. He didn't fight in the U.S. at all and the IBHOF voters are overwhelmingly American.Comment
