We know leagues are gonna make money off their athletes but you asked why its a big deal and I gave you my answer cause they can make money off of it. Now that I think about it this is the NBA's M O cause they have always marketed individuals basically since the end of the showtime lakers and celtics eras came to an end and Jordan took over. They will oversaturate the market with anybody who can boost merchandise and tickets sales for any amount of time. Lin is the man doing that right now so more power to him. Jeremy Lin's story blew up for the same reasons that Tiger Woods first blew up. For the same reasons that the Williams sisters blew up. For the same reason that Manny Pacquiao blew up. For the same reasons that the Klitschkos have had so many headlines.

Its outside the norm, so people are willing to give it a second look.

Bo Jackson was an superb athlete and played both pro football and pro baseball, but because he was black, it wasn't a far stretch of the imagination for anyone who watches pro sports to watch someone black dominate.

Let it have been an Eskimo, or a Native American, or a Mongolian, or a kid from Sri Lanka doing that **** and it would be on the cover of Sports Illustrated and Time Magazine.

Conversely, if it were a black kid from Brooklyn who wins the Tour de France, that too would be headline news.
