Is Mayweather the most well-rounded fighter ever?

There are boxers who hit harder, who throw more punches, are braver, are better offensively.
The only thing FLoyd has got is defense, hes good at making you miss, so how does that equate to being well rounded? And dont go saying Floyd is good offensively, anyone who throws 15 punches round cannt be classed as offensive.
Its hard to gauge how good someone is who chooses not to fight often.Last edited by hugh grant; 02-06-2012, 10:31 AM.Comment

This is an idiotic commit. If Mayweather fought everyone the way he fought Gotti , he wouldnt be undefeated now. His ability to adapt and change his style is one of the skills that keeps him undefeated. He has to focus on defense, it whats keep him safe against Power punchers. Mayweather is already an all time great, all die hard boxing fans know this. Only the casual fans/fan boys think he is not.Something he should do more often. He could have ko'd Mosley any time after like the sixth round. I think he was just a little leery of Mosley's huge punching power. He could have easily stopped Marquez as well, had he stepped on the gas pedal. And neither of those two have been stopped, despite being in there with some huge punchers throughout their careers.
Floyd is extremely well-rounded. My only knock on him, is that he doesn't let his hands go more. He opts for the pot-shot approach a little too much for me. If he fought everyone the way he fought Gatti, he'd EASILY be the ATG.Comment

Also, It would be impossible to fight everyone the same way (unless you only fight the same type of opponents). That is a remedy for failure. This is an idiotic commit. Well he has a 70% ko rate in 42 fights, hes the most accurate of any fighter in the history of the sport, and he walks down hard young hungry champions and stops them. So that means he hits hard enough,he dosnt need to throw hundred punches a round only to land 3, and hes as brave as they come by fighting the best at at thier natural weight coming off victories and hungry, so thats very brave of him. There are boxers who hit harder, who throw more punches, are braver, are better offensively.

People like you, who loves a fool that throws 100 punches while missing 95% of them. Suffreing from cuts and injuries due to punishment because you think thier brave. What good is power if you cant land a punch. You need to watch boxing closer and learn the game. Mayweather is the very defintion of being well rounded!Comment

If all he had was defense, he wouldn't be winning fights. He throws enough to win. He doesn't throw useless punches. He is accurate and efficient and to me, that is a lot better offense than a guy who lands 15 out of 100 punches. There are boxers who hit harder, who throw more punches, are braver, are better offensively.

I don't know what you mean by braver. Is it because he hasn't been in any wars? When a guy who is undefeated has never been in any wars, wouldn't that be because he's that good? No one has ever pushed him to that limit? Just saying. I mean, people call Spartan warriors, but they relied heavily on their defense and their shields. Being a warrior isn't about who can eat a lot of punches.
I mean, it's not like he's fighting Cotto at a catchweight...Comment

The thing is you are making up the definition of well rounded to suit Floyd. How can you say his power is high up there, when he is a featherfisted puncher in comparison to real hard punchers?
He might get more KO's than his power deserves but that is for other reasons other than power.
Floyd is lopsided, he is great defensively, but he has no offense. Every offensive move he makes is from counterpunching which is his defense rather than his offense. Hes got no offensive instincts because he dont care to make a fight and to entertain.
People who are better offensively than Floyd pay for it sometimes because of Floyds defense, rather than his offense.
I dont see how people turn it around to be well rounded?Last edited by hugh grant; 02-06-2012, 10:44 AM.Comment

Its hard to gauge how good someone is who chooses not to fight often.100% agreed!Very smart man! Many don't understand this, you have hit the nail dead on. Mayweather is the first of his kind, mastering the sport of boxing. Physical and mental strengths are very important in boxing as well. Mayweather has mastered them both. You've never see him panic, even when hurt,or uncomfortable. The best that ever done it so far!I still say that we have to stop using boxers of the past to evaluate boxers of today. I was also a victim of this statement. I used to think that guys back in the day were the best.
My uncle fought Archie (lost) and Randy Turpin(won). I would always hear how amazing these fights were. Until I watched the video. These fighters back in the day all got hit (a lot). Some of them took it better than others. Some of them lasted longer than others. At the end of the day I felt as though stamina and punch rate won MOST of these fights (maybe until the Ali era).
But Floyd has learnt how to combine all of the previous attributes of these past fighters and churn it into a total package of efficiency and accuracy. i think its amazing. Roy was great but when his speed faded he faded and to me he never fully learned the art.Comment

Floyd will only convince me he can be considered well rounded when he isnt lopsided.
The day i see Floyd throw punches and not pay for it is the day i will think he is a true master. Plus he has no power. If he did he would be trying to ko people to show off.Comment

Even if he does have power and throws a lot of punches, something tells me you still won't be satisfied with Floyd. Judging from your post history.Comment
