im really bored of the "roy jones was actually really crap, he only fought washed up fighters" arguments. If to every argument any1 gives u ur gonna come back and say "he was washed up" or "he was green" or "he had to lose weight" then wats the point. Have an excuse for every success roy jones had.....wat bout ruiz? maybe his problem was he was too heavy? -
Maybe I am being a little bit harsh. I just read an article today though. That said that Jones "brutalized" Toney or something of the like. Which is total nonsense. He won the rounds, but he didnt do it really in any kind of impressive fashion. To be fair though, that style, low punch output, stay on the outside use reach, ring generalship, is really the only way you will come out of a bout with Toney with a W in my opinion. Unless your talking about him at heavyweight where a guy like Vitali could give him problems for several reasons. His obvious height and strenght advantange, that fact he uses it so well. And the fact he fights so well going backward.Originally posted by Londonerzzim really bored of the "roy jones was actually really crap, he only fought washed up fighters" arguments. I don't think Roy beat him down or anything, but the win was definitely impressive, because a lot of people thought Roy was going to lose, and Roy made him look a fool and completely outclassed him. Sure, Roy, didn't stand and trade, but why would he when he can land punches and get out of the way before he takes a shot in return? This is boxing, and Toney was clearly outboxed.Originally posted by ChetMaybe I am being a little bit harsh. I just read an article today though. It is history. I dont care what happened in that boring fight. Toney already in my mind is more an all time great than Jones. With continued success at heavyweight he will prove it even more.Originally posted by Red_MenaceI don't think Roy beat him down or anything, but the win was definitely impressive, because a lot of people thought Roy was going to lose, and Roy made him look a fool and completely outclassed him. What I want at Heavyweight
Wlad vs Byrd= Wlad wins, makes a defence, then fights Brewster in a rematch.
Toney vs Brewster= Toney wins, fights someobody in the top 10 and wins then fights Wlad or Vitali.Comment

Why is it that when Roy is beaten it's cus "he's old, or he's not in his prime anymore". But oddly enough, Jones biggest victories come from a Hopkins who was years from his prime and a Toney who struggled with weight at 160 (wasn't he really dehydrated in that fight too?), and who seems to me to be a fighter who naturally belongs at a heavier division. Alot of you cats are throwin out double standards when it comes to Roy.
I agree whole heartedly that Roy was very dehydrated in the first fight, no arguments, it was obvious. But who was saying that he was out of his prime then? It was all weight loss from what I was hearing. But when he came out so confident and letting his hands go in the second fight and caught a good counter punch, suddenly he's out of his prime? I looked at the Jones/Hopkins fight earlier today and then I watched Jones/Tarver 3 again and the only thing I saw different about Jones was that he was afraid in the last fight. Speed is still there, can still move around the ring pretty well.
Gatti's comments were pretty correct in my view. The truth is the truth regardless of whose mouth it comes from.Comment

I think it's wrong to say Roy isn't still a good fighter. Tarver, right now, is a better fighter than Roy. And I'm sure there are many fighters that would lose to Roy. Tarver is a good fighter, and to say he beat a Roy Jones that was totally washed up would be dishonest and unfairly diminish his victory. At the same time, Roy is in his decline, and I think it's equally unfair to say he was never any good, or that he wasn't great, just because he's lost his last three fights. All of these people are good fighters. They hit their peaks at different times. Some matchups favour certain fighters. I think people are too quick to try to tear down elite fighters. It's as if they expect a great fighter to have a perfect record, and the minute they struggle or lose, they were never any good.Comment

I believe that my dad beat Roy at the perfect time in Roy's career. When Roy came back down from heavyweight, that was when Roy was at his most vulnerable stage losing that 25 pounds of muscle. At that time also was when my dad was really hungry and was pretty much at his peak.Comment

Menace, I don't expect any fighter to have a perfect record, I know it seems like I've been harsh in my statements on Roy, but I'm just trying to point out what alot of people aren't seeing or choose not to see. Roy still is a good fighter, or rather, he can still be a good fighter. I don't think anyone who saw that fight can say that Roy wasn't scared and just trying to survive that night. I don't think I've ever said that Roy wasn't talented, I just don't agree that he's great for certain reasons.Comment

saying that arturo gatti is in roy jones junior's league is a ludicrious statementOriginally posted by ChetAt least Gatti actually FIGHTS!!!!!
I dont call what Jones did on Saturday outside of the 5th round actual FIGHTING. And what he did in alot of other fights.
Gatti gives his all, he deservers respect. Jones has more natural talent than him sure. But Gatti holds stature in Jones class as far a star status is concerned because he makes the most with what he has talent wise.Comment
