you did mentioned that Manny was an underfed teenager and indeed was when he won the Flyweight from the lineal and best flyweight at that time. but what was more impressive was the fact that he was a TEENAGER and WEIGHT DRAINED. how many teenagers beat the best in their weightclass?
Mike Tyson got the respect of almost every boxing analyst since becoming the youngest HW champ at age 20.
Yes, but you are neglecting a MAJOR point, and one which I think is the crux of the whole discussion. It has been mentioned on this subject only by one other than myself, which I saw after I had written in.
It is that Manny P, at 106 lbs (which he sustained only for his debut fight) was just a skinny underfed teenager, whose weight progress could be seen as he grew a little older. (and earned money for better food) Jones was at least an almost fully grown man at whatever age he had his first fight. I don't even have to bother checking in Boxrec.
THIS, is the vital point, not "lineal" champs, or who went up in weight more than the other.Comment

I honestly think both fighters are equally great fighters.
Roy Jones Jr. is closing in at 42 years old but he is damaging his legacy because it is leaving us a bad image of him being knockout by young fighters.
I will wait till Manny Pacquiao and Roy Jones Jr. both retire because comparing them now is ridiculous because they are still fighting. Also, is Pacquiao even fighting beyond 35 years old?
I honestly that the comparison for the two should start at:
Manny Pacquiao at 112 - Flyweight limit since he won a belt there and defended it.
Roy Jones Jr. at 160 - Middleweight limit since he fought most of his fights there and won the IBF Middleweight belt twice.
165 (Margarito) - 112 = 53 lbs
226 (Ruiz) - 160 = 66 lbs
I think that is a good place to start the math equations in finding out who did the best.Last edited by jjbj2; 05-28-2011, 12:45 AM.Comment

Yea, just caught that. I was looking at something else. I was thinking of how old he was when he won the Heavyweight Championship. Anyway, I got 34 years old when Roy Jones Jr. beat John Ruiz. And John Ruiz is the first recognized Latino Heavyweight champion by way of Puerto Rican nationality.Comment

Both are pretty remarkable. Pretty damn close. Even if he did only beat Ruiz, going from middleweight to heavyweight is some early 1900 *****! haha Pac did beat the best at the lower weight besides lightweight until his next fight when he finally fights a true lightweight champion haha. But he did brutally knock out Hatton who was the best fighter at 140, and beat the best at 140 besides Floyd.
Really really close.Comment

And, of course, when you get to Ly-heavy and cruiser, the whole weight proportion is completely "skewed".
Another point is that Jones, except for the 1st Hopkins fight, faught only well established champions, and at least a few Hall of Famers, whereas Manny P. fought mostly manufactured champs and again mostly, not nearly the top men in their divisions. I see no problem with immediately going for Jones, much as I like Manny P.Comment
