Who has a better defense? Locche or Mayweather?

As some others have said, they're kind of hard to compare despite both being defensive minded fighters. Locche was the man when it came to just being plain slippery and difficult to lay hands on; Mayweather utilises blocking, parrying and subtler movements a bit more and generally appears to be thinking ahead to set up countering opportunities. I guess I consider Locche the greater defensive boxer, but Mayweather the more nuanced technician overall.Comment

Locche had an incredible natural ability. His defense was the product of freakish natural talent and god given reflexes. Floyd is the result of science, study and hard work. I think it's safe to say that there isn't a fight in history who works harder in the gym than Floyd Mayweather. He has taken a concept of defense and put in more hours than we will ever know to master his craft.
Locche was a very masterful guy, but in my view he is more of a Roy Jones Jr type defensive fighter, or Muhammad Ali, where it is more god given reflexes and athletic ability than actual defense.
Floyd Mayweather, to me, hands down has the greatest defense of any fighter I have ever seen. He has implemented evasiveness, footwork, and counter punching into his defense to make him the best defensive fighter the world has ever seen.
Even as Floyd has aged and slowed down and lost some reflexes, he continues to be a force because his defense is a product of hard work. Once Locche's smoking and age caught up with him, his defense wasn't very good, as was the case with Ali and Roy Jones Jr....Comment

excellent post sg. i'm not so sure floyd is better at blocking/parrying, but his traps and always being in position to counter makes him a better technician. his use of his shoulder and elbow to dictate real estate between his opponent and his sense of timing make him a greater technician. but not a better defensive fighter. As some others have said, they're kind of hard to compare despite both being defensive minded fighters. then you have the component of who did what against who, which would be a never ending debate.Comment

Floyd's opposition is very underrated by haters and analysts... Nobody Floyd fights will ever be good enough. Before Pacquiao it was Mosley, before that it was Oscar... It doesn't matter who he fights, his opposition is always going to be crap. Even his win over Chico gets pissed on.excellent post sg. i'm not so sure floyd is better at blocking/parrying, but his traps and always being in position to counter makes him a better technician. his use of his shoulder and elbow to dictate real estate between his opponent and his sense of timing make him a greater technician. but not a better defensive fighter.

He's just one of those guys, just like Ali in his hayday... Look at how we look at Ali now though.Comment

wow, go overboard much?
locche's d is all god given ability and floyd's is hard work.
best defensive fighter world has ever seen, this is completely relative as opponent choice has A LOT to do with PROVING you are the best defensive fighter. you certainly are welcome to an educated opinion, but you're talking about floyd's defense looking so great recently against SSM (good to very good performance), jmm (doesn't count really vs a plodding looking guy from 2 weight classes below, time off, ancient oscar etc.
talk to me about age catching up with floyd compared to locche when floyd has 100 fights and about 60 0more rounds.Comment

floyd is like ali in his heyday now!!!!!
every fight for floyd post castillo except for mosley (and oscar for obvious reasons) has been against a guy that was not the best guy around at that time- period.
feel free to run the laundry list of excuses as to why.Comment

Locche had a reputation for living recklessly outside of the gym and not taking care of his body. Yes, without question Floyd works harder outside of the ring than Locche, IMO. Look at how Floyd looked against guys like Chico Corralles, Castillo, Gatti, Oscar, Hatton, Mosley... Ancient Oscar? Then you talk about Marquez coming up 2 weight classes? Big deal. Marquez said "I feel great. Mayweather is just the greatest fighter in the world." Marquez never used the weight gain as an excuse to my knowledge, but instead said that Mayweather just simply outmatched him. Even at 140 Marquez stands little chance.wow, go overboard much?

Floyd went up to 154 to fight Oscar, who came in closer to 165. Oscar looked incredible that night, and he was not "ancient" as you say. He fought a great fight and even won on one of the cards... As Oscar said (as did everybody who fought Floyd) "Floyd is just the greatest fighter in the world."
Locche was a great fighter with a solid resume but it does not trump Floyd's as you seem to believe it does... Locche's resume is loaded with many bums and cab drivers. Floyd's opposition has been A list for many years....
I would like to see you make a case for Locches defense being more a product of hard work than natural ability and reflexes...Comment
