How Would You Rate Pacman's Defense? His "slickness"?

when cotto used the jab manny was controled and when cotto stoped use it he got his ass whooped

lol! Watch the fight again in slow motion. Pac figured out early Cotto's jab after 2nd round. Every time Cotto going to throw his jab Pac will slip under it and land of his own first.

All i know is that pac has a better defense and offense than floyd against dela hoya and hatton.

In the purest sense of the word, DEFENSE, as in:

• bobbing
• weaving
• dodging
• shoulder rolls
• parrying
• blocking
• slipping
• evasive footwork

He is a 6, but, but, but...what is elusive about Pacquiao is that he was never really a "sitting duck" in terms of just "defending". His "real" defense rest on countering the opponent and not letting them take breathes with his all-out / full-throttle / all-angle punching mentality.

Mainly, he is good with his right lead foot to go outside the orthodox's left jab and countering with his patented LEFT CROSS/LEFT HOOKERCUT and following up with his blistering quickness and pace (see Oscar De La Hoya, David Diaz and Miguel Cotto).

And thus his counter-straight blasting IS his defense. And in that light, he is a 9 or 10 (in a perfect 10 scale).

And so he makes up for his lack of "pure" defense with it.

though i give pac an 8 for defense... he really wants the opponent feel they are winning against him and then poof... they became koko krunch on the floor

Thanks. I think that the topic at hand is a bit biased on Pacquiao because Pacquiao was never really a "pure" defender as I have described it.

What is tricky in this beautiful sport of pugilism is that what is within the confines of the OFFENSE and DEFENSE is very subtle and I think that this is the very case on PACQUIAO AND DEFENSE issue.

Mayweather's DEFENSIVE PROWESS as well can be an offensive threat if one can really see the in-betweens.

The issue is really the application within the ring. The master, with his own ideosyncrasies is an ever subjective issue that makes this sport an art.

There are no "one way" to do things or being a classical and methodical boxer can be as boring as watching clouds passing.

The real issue is whether Pacquiao can "defend" his position well and take away what the opponent can't defend.

That is the true way of appreciating any fight.

Defense is underrated because fans underappreciate foot movement and footwork in general.

Just cuz' he doesn't "shoulder roll" which is actually an overrated tactic, but rather uses distance, spacing, angles and a blistering offense (best defense) doth not mean he is not a good defensive fighter.

With his ability, if he really wanted to he could be a goddamn defensive genius, but he actually cares about the fans and is wired to fight hard for 12 rounds to knock the other guy out.

In my honest opinion, DEFENSE is also synonimous with the OFFENSE. A fight have those two intertwined until no one can discern what is OFFENSIVE or DEFENSIVE (techniques)...

Thus Mayweather's purported DEFENSIVE SKILLS are easily his offense also as he would manage to position himself with the leverage of accurate pot-shotting or counters.

With Pacquiao, he isn't the classical DEFENDER but the classical DEFENDER in the light that he can "defend" his stance and position rather well by going after the attacker himself.

We know Pacquiao is an offensive machine, but I really do think he's defense is underrated. He's shown an ability to slip punches when not engaging or when in a defensive position. Of course, he does get hit more often because he's an offensive fighter. But how do you rate his defense?

he has above average defense, he just get's careless at times. Like in the Cotto fight he only really got hit because he was trying to be a "tough guy". trying to prove he could take a punch. When he's aware of an opponents power we can see him slip a lot and avoid punches on foot work alone (vs DLH).

I think it's his natural instinct to skip defense though and opt for Offense. Marquez had the same problem, spent too much time looking for openings that he ate punches in the process.

I will say though he rarely get's hit flush, it's often only grazing punches. Clottey got one "good" shot on him and I remember it left a red mark on pacs face. Cotto got a few in when Manny lied on the ropes. I would say going by the fights Clottey had more punching power than Cotto.

in the lower weights Manny had very bad defense though. He totally didn't care about getting hit. Manny got hit with shots from Morales and Marquez that would have stropped most other fighters if it weren't for Pacquiaos huge dome.

like i said before, his defense is average at best. he gets away with a lot of mistakes because of his high caliber offense and his extreme athleticism. he gets sloppy, he gets hit too. but when ur going blow for blow and he lands like 3 or 4 shots and u land one or 2, then who's gonna come out the better?

his defense is nothing to be wowed about. but we dont watch him for his defensive prowess so theres no reason to take it personal and theres no reason to act like it is better than it is. thats just how i feel about it.

Pacquiao isnt known for his Defense more of his Offense...

His defense has gotten better, but not as elusive as others..

I still dont get why Floyd wont get in the ring with him though..?

For an offensive fighter, his defense is OK. If you look at who he faces and see the style, then comapre to anyone else with his offensiveness, then he prob gets hit a lot lessn

However his style is to stay in attack and attack, ofcourse he will get hit. You can't be world class at his attack constantly and not get hit.

Pacquiao's defense against oscar was great. it wa salso very good against Hatton, who landed almost nothing.

The Oscar one was a good example. He was very cautious in that fight.
