Actually, I belive we are talking long term effects. If it is just what is the most phyiscaly demanding sport "at the time" then yes there are a lot of sports that rival boxing and a few that surpass it, MMA being one of them.
However, you don't get the long term effects in MMA than you do in boxing. In boxing you get hit in the head A LOT more than MMA. Also, a lot of MMA strikes (e****ally elbows to the forehead) do facial damage while getting tagged on the chin with a right will kill brain cells.
Yes, getting elbows isn't excatly good for you, but based on how many times you get hit, where you get hit and how hard people are hitting, boxing is easily the hardest on the body over a long period of time.
Boxing is the absolute toughest one-on-one sport, bar none.
Winning the Stanley Cup is the toughest team accomplishment in all of sports.
The question was...the HARDEST Sport Physically. I mean, try to imagine yourself on some athletes position. I'm not a boxer but I'm that sure that I can box for 12 to 15 rounds! I might get knock-out halfway but give me a fighter as soft as me and I'll stay with him through 12 or even 20 rounds!
Now, I can't imagine myself covering 20-30 miles on foot (Marathon)...or do a 400-500 kilometers on a bike (under the sun, then under the rain) at a blistering speed of 60-70kph per hour. Hell! I can play Soccer all day then Sex all night...then play Basketball for 2 hours the next morning...go for a Swim for 3 hours after that...then go to the park and play Baseball for another 2 hours...then go call someone out for a Streetfight (MMA).
Seriously, Cycling/Marathon is equal to pushing your body to the limits!
Note: Cyclist like Boxers or athletes of any other sports do a regular training. And a Cyclist, for their training stays on the road for about 3-5 hours everyday. Again, ask Lance Amstrong.
Boxing has gotta be the toughest because not only are you exerting yourself, you're also receiving punishment the entire time. I was a swimmer in high school / college and there were times when I felt like I was gonna die in the pool, I was pushing myself so hard - I can't even imagine what it would have felt like if someone had been hitting me in the body and head at the same time.

You've gotta try Cycling dude...try crashing your bike once, or twice at 60-70kph. Then pull up your ass, get on your bike then ride again for the remainder of that 400-500km race to hell!
